Note | BIRTH Moses Cook was born April 25, 1764, the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Cook. (Goshen Vital Records Vol 1, p. 234, Family History Library film 2970.) Moses Cook was the grandson of Joseph Cook of Wallingford and Goshen. ("History of Litchfield CT," J. H. Lewis & Co., p. 881.) Moses Cook, son of Daniel and Elizabeth was born April 15, 1764. (transcription error, Barbour Collection of Goshen Vital Records, 1739-1854, Ct. St. Library, Family History Library book 974.6 V2wL v. 14, p. 17) Recorded by his great-nephew Phineas Wolcott Cook: Moses Cook, born 24 Apr. 1764 at Goshen, Litchfield, CT. Died 23 Feb. 1841. Submitted by Phineas Wolcott Cook, great nephew, from records of Phineas Wolcott Cook. (Logan Temple Endowments for the Dead, Vol. B, p. 225, #7947, Family History Library film 177,956) REVOLUTIONARY WAR Moses Cook recorded in "Register of Soldiers and Patriots," Mary Floyd Talmadge, D.A.R., p. 36. However, since he was only 12 when the war began, his service may have been brief and late. Moses Cook is noted in The History of Litchfield County, CT, Family History Library film 496,898, p. 327 and 347 as "General Cook, one of the Goshen men in the Revolution." GOSHEN: "On the top of Town Hill on the west side of the road, and a little south of the present dwelling of Gen. Moses Cook (Daniel's great-grandson) stood the house of Joseph Curtis, from Wethersfield. He sold out in 1750 to Daniel Cook, father of the present Moses Cook, Sr., who still survives. About 25 rods south of (that) dwelling, on the east side of the road, stood the house of Joseph Cook, from Wallingford, father of Daniel Cook, and grandfather of Moses Cook, Sr. Joseph Cook lived here until the time of his death, Nov. 7, 1764." "The History of Litchfield Co., Connecticut, by J. W. Lewis & Company, p. 327. CHILDREN There are no vital records for his children, but they are named in land records, town records, and probate. HISTORY In 1840 the assessment list of the town gives the following persons of wealth: Number one listed is Moses Cook, $13,000. (Found in "History of Goshen," by A. G. Hibbard, p. 404.) Having just taken over the property of his nephew Phineas Cook, he held all the family property at the top of Town Hill as well as in Milton society. LAND On October 2, 1836 he bought the property "which had been bought by Daniel Cook, Sr., and passed to his son Daniel, and his grandson Phineas...74 acres and 142 rods...and 42 acre"s with the house included. In his will he left this land with the sawmill jointly to his two sons Moses and Frederick..."the said Phineas Cook farm together with the sawmill and water privileges..." (Family History Library film 4425, No. 143.) However, his sons lost the property. Frederick left no will and Moses Jr.'s son William inherited all his land in 1880 when his father died. There were no large pieces of land left by then and no mill or water rights were mentioned. DEATH Moses Cook died February 23, 1841. (Goshen Vital Records Index Vol II. p. 28, Family History Library film 4427) Also recorded in Congregational Church Records of Goshen Connecticut, First Church of Christ 1791-1855, Family History Library film 4427: "Moses Cook died February 23, 1841, 2:28." PROBATE Probate Records for Goshen, Ct. #1629, dated 1841. His inventory, land and stocks totaled over $40,000 in 1841. MARRIAGE Married Lydia Thompson about 1790.
