REVOLUTIONARY WAR Revolutionary War History of Joel Gaylord Muster roll of December 1776 (original spelling retained.) To the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut now sitting at Middletown in said State in pursuant to alate resolve made by your Honors in respecting of raising volunteers in defense of our country, and whereas I being one appointed for that purpose I humbly begg leave to report as follows: That on the 23rd day instant I have (been) to the towns of Goshen, Torrington and Winchester to meet together in order to see who would enlist in so Great and Good a cause as was requested by your Honors…Those who have freely and voluntarily enlisted according to the respective names have I wrote on this sheet of paper and then proposed and warned them all to appear and make chois of their Comissions officers for said company as those towns had noted and signed to joyn together and accordingly meet according to said warning and proceeded to choose a Captain for said company and by the assistance of Col. Epaphras Sheldon and other gentlemen then present to lead them to said choise and they made choise of Major Medad Hills of Goshen for their Captain….Dated this 6th day of December 1776 by Cymaer Collons.   We the subscribers have and do voluntarily engage and undertake to march as soon as possible for the relief and succor of the Continental Army under such officers as shall be chosen by the company to which we belong and are not be held in said service more than two months unless the same love of our country which prompts our undertaking shall incline us to continue longer.” Forty shillings to be advanced to each soldier and noncommissioned officers.  Each soldier to outfit himself, including his own gun.  Officers to provide carriages to transport baggage of soldiers.  44 names, including Amasa Cook and Joel Gaylord (future brothers-in-law.) (Sylvester Judd Index to the Revolutionary War, Family History Library film 3538, pp. 138, 139)       Soldiers usually volunteered for a specific skirmish or area of conflict, planning to return home after that battle to put in their crops in Spring or harvest at the end of the season.  Occasionally an enlistment would be for a period of five or six months, but generally it was for a few weeks or months.  Eventually the enlistment process became too costly in time and manpower.  In about 1778 the government urged men to enlist for a period of three years “or the duration of the war.”   Joel Gaylord is listed on the reconstructed muster rolls of the following units mustered in Goshen, Connecticut: 1. May to December, 1776, campaign to New York City and Long Island under under General James Wadsworth and Colonels Fisher Gay and Selah Heart, Captain Stephen Goodwin. Also listed were his cousin Giles, presumably his brother Timothy who died and brother Joseph Gaylord. 2. December 31, 1776 for the "Relief of the Continental Army." Those previously enlisted were again recruited as they returned home. Many signed on for the duration of the war. (Sylvester Judd, Index to the Revolutionary War, Family History Library film 3538, p. 138a, b.) 3. "Joel Gaylord of Goshen" in Capt Chapman's Company enlisted August 15, 1777. ("Record of Service of Ct. Men in the Rev." Family History Library book 974.6 M2ca p. 222) 4. Continental Army (no officers listed) recruited May, 1777 in Goshen, Litchfield, and Torrington "for three years or the duration of the war." <i>Connecticut Men In The Revolution</i>: Family History Library book 974.6 M2ca, p. 222 states the above enlistment was in Capt. Chapman's Co. 15 August 1777 for the duration of the war. 5. Joel Gaylord, private paid for service in Capt. Baldwin's Company, 2nd Regt, Ct. Line, Col. Heman Swift for the period Jan 1, 1781 to Dec. 31, 1781. ("Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the Revolution," Family History Library book 974.6 M2ca p. 326) (Also recorded in Johnston, Henry P., ed.. Collections of the Connecticut Historical Society Revolution Rolls and Lists, 1775-1783. Vol. VIII. Hartford, CT, USA: Connecticut Historical Society, 1901, 1999, Ancestry.com) 6. In The History of Goshen (Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h) his Revolutionary War Record is stated thus: a. Joel & Joseph Gaylord, brothers served in Rev. War (p. 126) b. Titus and Joel Gaylord and Amasa Cook served in the Militia to New York (City) (p. 136) c. Joel Gaylord was in a Continental Unit to end of the war. He enlisted April 1, 1777 (p. 138) 7. In D.A.R. Index, 1990 (as recorded in http://home.neo.rr.com/summitdar/Vets.htm,) the following is printed: "Joel enlisted at Goshen, CT on August 15, 1777 as a private in Captain Albert Chapman's company, April, 1778. April, 1778 he was appointed musician, in the Seventh regiment, Connecticut line, commanded by Col. Herman Swift, which fought at Germantown. He was a Quarter Master Sergeant under Col. Seammell. REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION: Joel Gaylord Military Pension from service in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Archive Publication Number: M804; Archive Roll Number: 1059; Total Pages in Packet: 24. (Ancestry.com. U.S., Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files, 1800-1900 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2010.) We learn from Joel's Pension the following: Joel stated he served in the 7th and 2nd Connecticut Regiments and then enlisted in Colonel Scammel's Regiment of the Massachusetts Line. He was a private in the company commanded by Captain Comstock in the 2nd Regiment of the Continental Line commanded by Colonel Heman Swift. by the time he was released in June of 1783, he was a quartermaster Sergeant. He received the "Badge of Merit" for 6 years faithful service, signed by Colonel Heman Swift. HUDSON, OHIO Joel and Lois moved near Cleveland with the Hudson colony in 1800. Others who went were David Hudson, Samuel & William Norton, Milo Lee, Timothy & Abigail Laura, Allen Gaylord, Moses Thompson, Miss Ruth Gaylord-29 souls. ("History of Goshen, Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h, p. 193-197) Summit County was formed in 1840 from a portion of Portage County. Among the early settlers are "A. and J. Gaylord." Originally they settled in Stow Township, now Stow City. Immediately after the Revolutionary War, it was in Trumbull County; then in 1804 it became Portage County, and finally in 1840 Summit County. On Jan. 11 1811 the first election took place, and Thomas Gaylord was elected Treasurer. "Thomas Gaylord was a member of one of the best-known pioneer families in Stow. Jonathan Gaylord came here in 1809 with a party of 40 of his relations. His son-in-law, William Stow and his wife Peggy were in the group. Both families have always been well known here. William Stow was a distant cousin of Joshua, who founded Stow Township. He came from the same town: Middletown, CT." (www.answers.com/topic/stow-ohio, Sept 28, 2006) Apparently the three Gaylord brothers, Jonathan, Samuel and Stuart came with their cousin Joel, because they were all there at the same time. Ohio Land Records Record: 100 acres issued December 18 1807 by the Ohio Land Office to Joel Gaylord (Ancestry.com -Ohio Land Records) Tax records: “Portage County was formed from Trumbull County in 1807.  Medina County was formed from part of Portage in 1812 and Summit County was formed from part of Portage County in 1840.  The county seat of Portage County is Ravenna which laid out in 1808…Summit County, Ohio was formed in 1840 from Portage, Medina and Stark Counties.  Some early settlers were:  A & J Gaylord...In 1808 Portage County had been erected one year and included the territory of what is now Summit and Medina Counties.” (Early Ohio Tax Records, by Esther W. RESEARCH HARPERSFIELD, DELAWARE, NY A man named Joel Gaylord was one of the first landowners at Harpersfield in 1772, listed with Thomas Porter and Stephen Churchill as one of the original land owners in Harpersfield, Delaware, New York. (See Delaware County, NY Genealogy and History Site, http://www.dcnyhistory.org/books/munsharp.html, The History of Delaware County, by W.W. MUNSELL, p. 217-231. However, I don't believe it was the same Joel. The Harpersfield Joel was the son of Levi Gaylord. :“The following persons presented themselves to take the Covenant of God upon themselves, and to be admitted to solemn ordinance of baptism, viz: Mrssrs. Joseph Harper, David Hendry, William Hendry, Thomas Montgomery, Nathaniel Skinner, Robert (p. 446) Montgomery, Joel Gaylord (by application of his wife, he being absent), Mrs. Mercy Gaylord, Mr. Jedediah Gaylord.” “All these were examined and approved and recommended by the Elders (excepting Mr. Joel Gaylord, who being in family connection with the Elders-son of one and son-in-law of the other) was recommended by Messrs. Joseph Hotchkiss and Nathaniel Bristol.” (See Delaware County, New York: History of the Century, p. 445-446) Joel of Harpersfield was known to be there in 1783. (see Delaware County, New York: History of the Century, 1797-1897, Family History Library book 974.736 H2de, p. 434) He was documented there in 1787 (see The History of Delaware County, p. 218) And he was documented as an elder in the Methodist Church in 1792 in Harpersfield. (see Delaware County, New York: History of the Century, p. 445-446) He would have had to be two places at once because all this time our Joel was in Goshen, CT.
