Note | BIRTH John Cook, the son of Daniel and Elizabeth was born September 8, 1767. (The History of Goshen, CT , with Genealogies and Biographies, by A.G. Hibbard, Lewis M. Norton, Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h , p. 450.) John Cook is not named with the other children in his mother's will. To make his birth even more confusing, the same year he was born, two cousins were born with the same name: Walter's son and Lambert's son. The date of John's birth is one month earlier than the birth of his cousin John Cook, the son of Walter and Ruhamah Cook, both in Goshen. There is a vital record for the son of Walter, but none for this son of Daniel. Since there is no other record for him, we assume he died early. His birth was noted by Phineas Wolcott Cook: "John Cook, born 9 Sept. 1767 in Connecticut," no death date. Submitted by Phineas Wolcott Cook, “relative,” From records of Phineas Wolcott Cook, Logan Temple Endowments for the Dead, Vol. B, p. 271, #9593, Family History Library film 177,956) DEATH Probably died before his mother's will in 1796. He could also be the John Cook who died in 1824. See Congregational Church Records of Goshen Connecticut, First Church of Christ 1791-1855, Family History Library film 4427: "John Cook Died February 19, 1824, 2:15." This was obviously an adult, but that's all we know. RESEARCH: There is a man named John Cook who died 19 February 1824 in Goshen. Since he had no land records, it is impossible to determine who he is. He may be the present John because of proximity. Goshen Vital Records Index, Vol II, p. 15 (Family History Library film 4427) Probate Records for Goshen, Ct. #1619, Probate Packets, 1787-1880, Family History Library film 1015130, John Cook, dated 1824. Administrator is John H. Collins. bond signed by John H. Collins and Alfred Walter. Inventory was $54.55 sold at auction. John H. Collins had a claim against the estate of $25.05. Appraisers were Alfred Walter and George Cook. Second inventory totaled $106.52. No will. No children or wife mentioned. (Family History Library film 1,022,333) George Cook is the son of Moses Cook, also of Goshen. He was 14 years younger than John. John H. Collins was younger than John, and grew up in Litchfield County but had land dealings in Goshen. He was of the same Guilford family as Walter Cook's wife Ruhama Collins. |
