REVOLUTIONARY WAR Listed in "Register of Soldiers and Patriots in Litchfield County," p. 36, by Mary Floyd Talmadge, D.A.R. Daniel Sr. is noted "Daniel Cook, PS, son of Joseph b 8-19-1720 d Goshen 4-14-1778." (PS indicates "Physical Service" which is donation of food or other goods, etc.) Goshen records indicate he died in 1777 or 1778 during the beginning of the war. GOSHEN: "On the top of Town Hill on the west side of the road, and a little south of the present dwelling of Gen. Moses Cook (Daniel's great-grandson) stood the house of Joseph Curtis, from Wethersfield. He sold out in 1750 to Daniel Cook, father of the present Moses Cook, Sr., who still survives. About 25 rods south of (that) dwelling, on the east side of the road, stood the house of Joseph Cook, from Wallingford, father of Daniel Cook, and grandfather of Moses Cook, Sr. Joseph Cook lived here until the time of his death, Nov. 7, 1764." "The History of Litchfield Co., Connecticut, by J. W. Lewis & Company, p. 327. Land in Goshen: Daniel's name appears 12 times as purchaser of land between 1750 and 1774. The original land purchase was from Joseph Curtis, Warranty Deed dated June 4, 1750. (Goshen Land Records, Volume 3, 1749-1779, FHL film 4418, item 1, p. 61) He donated to the Congregational Church in Goshen. In 1771 the old meeting-house was disposed of to 7 men, including Daniel Cook. They were to rebuild a new church."History of Goshen," by Hibbard, p. 85. In 1771 the old meeting-house was sold to 7 men, including Daniel Cook Sr., which they would rebuild into a Sabbath-day house to be located on the southeast part of The Green, the town "reserving the right of use of the same as a town house for all public business to meet in on week days." One year later the town canceled the contract. (History of Goshen, p. 85.) THE FAMILY FARM Daniel bought the family farm in Goshen in 1772: The land first was sold to his brother: "Lumbert Cook of Goshen" (Daniel Sr.'s brother) for £180 sold Walter Cook of Goshen (another brother) 56 acres in the town of Goshen. It is “a lott of land laid out to Joseph Cook (their father) and Merrinan and is the whole of the lot…bounded west on a highway, north on the said Walter Cook, East partly on Jeremiah How’s land and partly on Noah Waddam’s land, south on Eni Buell’s land.” House and barn thereon, , (Vol. 4, p. 7 Family History Library film 4418. Dated 5 Nov. 1759. On Dec. 14, 1772 his brother Walter who thereafter moved to Berkshire County, Mass., sold all his Goshen land, including the home farm, to Daniel Cook: (Vol. 5, p. 177 (Family History Library film 4419) Walter Cook of Goshen for £230 sold Daniel Cook land in Goshen containing 56 acres, “the same land I purchased of Lumbert Cook and on which I now live, itt bounds west on highway, south on Moses Lyman’s land, east on Jeremiah How’s land, and part on Ens. Wadhams land. North on Zaccheus and Giles Griswold, Jun’s land, with a mansion house, a barn and shop.” DEATH Probate taken in court 14 April 1778. No death date was recorded. Family records give the date. Goshen records indicate he died in 1777 or 1778. "There are various persons who might have been buried in the East Street Burying Ground, but for whom there is no clear record of burial. Of these may be mentioned Joseph Cook who died 7 Nov. 1764, Daniel Cook who died in 1777 or 1778..." "Glimpses of Goshen: Inscriptions in the East Street Burying Ground, Goshen, CT," copied by Mabel Ingalls, (Family History Library book 974.61/G1 K2h, p. 37.) PROBATE Probate Records for Goshen, Ct. #1599, Probate Packets, 1787-1880, Family History Library film 1015130, are an inventory of his possessions totaling 179.12.10. His land totaled 1,868.0.0. MARRIAGE Married Elizabeth Pond, daughter of Samuel Pond Jr. and Abigal Goodrich. Elizabeth was born about 1722, probably in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut. She died September, 1796 at Goshen, Litchfield, Connecticut. MARRIAGE DOCUMENTATION "Families of Ancient New Haven," Vol 1, by D L. Jacobus, 1923, p. 440. Ref. is Wallingford Vital Records. Cheshire Connecticut Vital Records, 1694-1840 (FHL #974.67 H2b, p. 547) "Daniel Cook married Elizabeth Pond Feb. 6, 1745-6." Cheshire was then a few miles outside Wallingford where he was born. RESEARCH The original family record included son John born the same week as John the son of Walter who is Daniel's brother. There is no vital record for John, son of Daniel, but there is for John son of Walter. There is no death record, no land records. He was never mentioned in his mother's will in 1796 even though all other siblings were named. If there was a son John, he must have died before his mother. |
