Note | BIRTH: Barbour Collection of Goshen Vital Records, 1739-1854, Connecticut State Library, p. 16. (FHL book 974.6 V2wl, Vol 14, p. 19) Also Goshen Vital Records Vol 1, p. 237. "John, son of Walter b. Oct. 2, 1767." (Family History Library film 2970.) Also found in the "History of Goshen," by Rev. A. H. Hibbard, p. 450. The same year he was born, two cousins were born with the same name: Daniel's son and Lambert's son. Also in family records: John Cook, b. 21 oct. 1767 at Goshen, CT. (No death date) Submitted by Phineas Wolcott Cook, a relative. From records of Phineas Wolcott Cook, Logan Temple Endowments for the Dead, Vol. D, p. 325, #11506, FHL 177958) FATHER'S PROBATE "At a court held 26 July, 1780 came Ruhamah Cook, widow of Richmond," allowed to be guardian of Isaac, John and Asenah, minor children of Walter Cook, late of Richmond. (Probates of Berkshire County, MA, Vol. 2, p. 184b, FHL film 873,481.) HISTORY: John was not of sound mind, a non-compos person. "David Chapin and Isaac Cook of Richmond, relations of John Cook of the same…represent that the said John Cook is a non-compos or distracted person and incapable to take care of himself. They therefore request that inquisition thereof be made and a guardian appointed to the said John Cook as the law in such cases directs. Dated at Richmond 5 December 1796. "Isaac Cook appeared and took upon himself the guardianship of the said John Cook and a bond is taken of the said Isaac for the faithful discharge…” (Probates of Berkshire County, Mass, Vol. 10, p. 2, FHL film 873.485) Again in Probates is "the second account of Isaac Cook, guardian of John Cook of Richmond...a non-compos person." It is a petition for expenses for the support of John Cook to 8 July 1812. The amount is $1,669,29 (Probates of Berkshire Co., MA, Vol 16, p. 315, FHL 876,295.) INVENTORY: The inventory of his inheritance was brought to court 2 May 1799 and signed by his brother Isaac who had been appointed his guardian. "An Inventory of the estate of John Cook of Richmond in the County of Berkshire, a non-compos person, taken and appraised by us the subscribers under oath pursuant to a warrant hereunto annexed as follows. Viz: "One tract of land lying in said Richmond, being the eastern part of Lot #30 in the First Division of lots in said Richmond containing 26 acres, 147 rods with half of a house and barn thereon. "And one other tract containing fourteen acres and 121 rods lying in the northwest corner of said lot. "The use and improvement of the whole of which is given by the said John’s father, Walter Cook, deceased, to his mother Ruhamah Cook, during her natural life and the remainder in fee to the said John. Appraised by us at $967. Dated May 2, 1799 and signed by Isaac Cook, guardian Signed by appraisers Nathaniel Bishop, David Rossitor and John Hall." (Probates of Berkshire County, Mass, Vol. 10, p. 26-27, FHL film 873.485) "Second account of Isaac Cook, guardian of John Cook of Richmond...a non-compos person," was presented. Petitions for expenses for the support of John Cook presented from April, 1808 to 8 July, 1812. The amount is $1,669.29 for present and future expenses. It is granted and real estate to be sold June 20, 1808. (Probates of Berkshire Co., Mass, Vol. 16, p. 315, FHL film 876,295) DEATH: Vital Records of Berkshire, MA, (FHL 974.41/R1 V28r): Richmond Deaths, p. 92: "John Cook, June 26, 1831." He would have been 64 years old. Although the Nathaniel Cook family also lived in Richmond, there was no one else named John Cook. RESEARCH: John Cook is such a common name, it is important to know the others in the vicinity. However, there was not another John Cook in Richmond. There is a John Cook in Williamstown, Berkshire, Mass on the 1800 Census. He and his wife are 26-45, which is the right age group, with an older woman in the house over 45. There are three males and one female under ten. However, because of John's handicap, we can be certain the Williamstown John Cook is a different man. Another John Cook of East Haddam who married Phebe Redington in 1809 at Richmond, but has no land records and did not live there. |
