Note | 1810 CENSUS: Springfield, Otsego, New York. There are four males in the household: two are under ten and two are 10-16. There are two females: one is under ten and one is 26-44. Pitman Sr. is not there, and it isn't likely Pitman Jr. was 16. Four houses away is "P. Cook." 1820 CENSUS: Not found 1830 CENSUS: Burlington, Otsego, New York, Clearly Pitman Cook, although indexed as Ftman Cook: One male under five, one male 5-10, one male 10-15, one male20-30 and one male 30-40. Three females, one under five, one 5-10 and one 30-40. Obviously this is Pitman Jr. 1840 CENSUS: Burlington, Otsego, New York. "Pitman Cooke" has 0021001000000-0011001 two males 10-15, one male 15-20 and one male 40-50. There are 3 females, one10-15, one 15-20 and one 40-50. 1850 CENSUS: Neither Pitman nor Isabel Cook or Cooke are found on any census. 1860 CENSUS: Pitman Cook is found in the source "NY 1860 Federal Census Index " at Burlington, Otsego, NY, p. 394, but not in the index at Ancestry.com. 1870 CENSUS: Burlington, Otsego, New York. Pitman Cook, age 78, a painter, born N.Y. Also in the household is Mehitable Cook age 58, John Cook, a painter, age 48, Eva Cook age 14 and Hugh Underwood, a painter, age 20. All born in New York. 1880 CENSUS: West Burlington, Otsego, New York. Pitman Cook, age 87 (b. 1793), a painter. He is married, parents both born in Mass. (probably never knew his father was born in Wallingford.) Isabel is his wife, age 68, born New York and her parents both born in Vermont. John Cook, age 58, is the son of Pitman and is also a painter. He was born in New York, his father was born in Massachusetts and his mother born in New York. (West Burlington, Otsego, New York, FHL 1254915, NA Film Number T9-0915, p. 16D) BAPTIST CHURCH: The Baptist Missionary Magazine, By Massachusetts Baptist Convention, American, p. 157. (http://books.google.com/books?id=4sNJAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA157&dq=Pitman++Cook%22#PPA157,M1): Donations received in March 1851: Madison Association (including Cazanovia), Delphi: Pitman Cook - 1. BURLINGTON, OTSEGO, NY "'I have lived in Burlington 70 years,' says Mr. Pitman Cook. He came in with the Chapins in 1800, and afterwards married a daughter of Alexander Parker..." (History of Otsego Co., NY, FHL Q-book 974.774 H2h, p. 99.) EGREMONT, BERKSHIRE, MA Pitman, age 57, lived in Egremont in 1850 as stated in the Revolutionary War Pension Application for his father. The application for the Certificate of Revolutionary War Service made by the son of the soldier, Pitman Cook of Egremont. Included a description of service, dated 22 February 1850. (Application #29,731, FHL 970,639) It seems plausable because he is not in the 1850 Census. In a deposition dated 2 February, 1850 by his aunt Asenath Goodale, it was stated: "His (Pitman Collins Cook) death took placed on the eleventh day of January in the year 1845, leaving no widow surviving, his wife died prior to his death, and my said brother has now surviving only one child whose name is Pitman Cook. He is in this town of Egremont." Pitman has no land record in Egremont. In fact he has no land record in Berkshire Co., MA. The Goodale family is there in land and cemetery records, but Pitman Cook is not. He may have been of Egremont while he was applying for Revolutionary War Pension, but he didn't stay there. He may have lived with the Goodales for a while. By 1860 he was back at Burlington for the census. |
