Note | BIRTH: Barbour Collection of Wallingford Vital Records, Vol. 48, p 97: "Pitman Collins (Cook,) s. Walter & Reuina, b. June 28, 1757." Citing 13:564. Also in "Families of Ancient New Haven," Vol 1, by D L. Jacobus, 1923, p. 440. Ref. is Wallingford Vital Records. REVOLUTIONARY WAR: He enlisted at Richmond, Berkshire, Mass. (S29731, MA Line.) His son Pitman applied 9 April 1850 for Pension in Richmond, Berkshire County, Mass, saying his father had enlisted at Richmond. (See The History of Berkshire County, MA Also recorded in The History of Berkshire County, MA, by J. B. Beers, (FHL 974.41 H2hb, Vol. 1, p. 204.) This book also states on page 190 that Pitman and (his uncle) Lambert Cook enlisted at Becket. Also in Soldiers and Sailors of the Rev. War. Comp. By secy. Of the Commonwealth, Ms. Boston. 1896-1908. (17v.): 3:939 His Pension Application #29,731 (FHL 970,639) is 30 pages long with considerable personal information. A few excerpts: Official Certification of Pitman C. Cook’s Revolutionary War Service, as follows: 1. Eight months service in 1775 in Capt. David Noble’s Company, Col. John Patterson’s Regiment. He was a Private from Richmond. (On page 21 it says this service was at Boston and the sea shore.) 2. On the pay roll of Capt. Aaron Rowley’s company, Major David Rossiter’s detachment from Berkshire at Ticonderoga, N.Y. Feb. 23 to April 7, 1777 - 43 days, 140 miles. 3. He was on a payroll of Capt. Amos Rathbone’s company, Major Caleb Hyde’s detachment to the Northern Army. He served July 8 to 20, 1777 - 13 days. 4. He was on a payroll of Capt. Aaron Rowley’s company, Col. John Ashley’s detachment from Berkshire to Stillwater, July 22, 1777 - 23 days. Deposition by Caleb Eddy of the Shakers: Walter Cook had one son named Pitman C. Cook who joined and lived with the Society. He died in this society five years ago last January. I heard my father tell of their service together in the Revolutionary War. They were stationed at Bambridge near Boston. Pitman C. Cook was taken from his company and employed with other carpenters building barracks for the soldiers about September 1, 1775. “I went to Bambridge to cook for my father, and was sent often to different places. I saw Pitman Cook in that carpenter unit.” He also itemizes Pitman’s service record. Dated 4 October 1850. Deposition by Betsey Cook dated 2 April 1850: “He and his family a number of years ago separated, he went and joined the Shakers in the town of Hancock in this county. He lived with said Shakers for a number of years, and until he died. His death took place with the said Shakers on the eleventh day of January in the year eighteen hundred and forty-five, leaving no Widow surviving. His wife died prior to his death. Said Pitman C. Cook has now surviving only one child whose name is Pitman Cook. He is in the town of Egremont in this county. My brother in law, the said Pitman C. Cook was a number of years older than my said husband." CHURCH RECORDS: Joined the Society of Shakers at Hancock, Berkshire, MA more than 20 years before his death. BERKSHIRE Co, MA: Land records in Berkshire County show Pitman C. Cook sold his Richmond land Aug 18, 1785 (19:182) and October 1785(20:457.) His land in Richmond was next to his brother Walter's (28:22.) He sold land in Becket May 6, 1805 (42:221). (Berkshire Co., MA Grantor Index, FHL film 872,066.) RICHMOND: Land records show he was in Richmond at least from 1784 to 1795, which is about when he left his family to live with the Shakers. Pitman Collins Cook of Richmond, yeoman, for 58 Lb sold John Bean, Gentleman of Richmond, 15 acres. Land is in Richmond, bounds Johnstown, north on the highway to Walter Cook. Dated 22 May 1784, (Berkshire deeds 19:182, FHL 872085.) On the same day "Pitman Collins Cook of Richmond, yeoman," for 60 Lb sold John Nicholes of Richmond 23 acres in the 2nd Division called Yoking town (Johnstown?) Bounds on James Ford, west on Walter Cook. (20:457) In 1795 his wife's family sold land in Becket to their brother which had been given to them as a result of their Mother Mary's right of dower. Siblings were named. Pitman and Rhoda Cook were said to be living in Richmond. It's especially interesting because Pitman never appears on a single census under any combination of names, including Pitt. They must have been living with someone or may have died or moved away. (Berkshire Deeds 42:21, 21 Nov. 1795, FHL 872097) HANCOCK, BERKSHIRE, MA: He was in Richmond noted to be "Pitman Cook of Richmont" on 21 November 1795 when he signed deed 42:221 with his wife Rhoda Cook. However, by 24 March, 1812 she was called "Rhoda Cook, wid." in spite of the fact that his Rev. War Pension stated he left no widow. (Berkshire Deed 50:163) 1820 CENSUS: Not found in any combination of names. 1830 CENSUS: Not found 1840 CENSUS: Pitman Cook Sr. not found. At Burlington, Otsego, New York his son "Pitman Cooke" has two males 10-15, one male 15-20 and one male 40-50. There are 3 females, one10-15, one 15-20 and one 40-50. Pitman Sr. is not there. DEATH: NEHGS Register, Shaker Death Records, 115:126. "Pitman Cook, Jan. 11, (no year written, but in a chronological list between 1843 and 1847. He was noted to be 88 years old.) “January 2(1, Sabbath, 1845, was present at the funeral of Pitman Cook, an aged brother of the 2d family. He was 87 years old, had been personally acquainted with Mother Ann..." Two Years' Experience Among the Shakers: Being a Description of the Manners and Customs of that People, the Nature and Policy of Their Government, Their Marvellous Intercourse with the Spiritual World, the Object and Uses of Confession, Their Inquisition, in Short, a Condensed View of Shakerism ..., By David Rich Lamson, Shaker Collection Library of Congress, Published by The author, 1848, Original from Harvard University http://books.google.com/books?id=lGENAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA160&dq=Pitman++Cook%22#PPA159,M1, Searched online: pp. 159-160 "Families of Ancient New Haven," Vol 1, by D L. Jacobus, 1923, p. 440 stated the death took place in Richmond 11 January 1845. |
