Note | BIRTH: Probably was born shortly after moving to Richmond. Isaac likely lived in Richmond his whole life. He bought and sold land there almost continuously from 1804 until 1829. However, birth records are found for only his first three children in Richmond. FATHER'S PROBATE "At a court held 26 July, 1780 came Ruhamah Cook, widow of Richmond," allowed to be guardian of Isaac, John and Asenah, minor children of Walter Cook, late of Richmond. (Probates of Berkshire County, MA, Vol. 2, p. 184b, FHL film 873,481.) BERKSHIRE Co, MASS: Walter Cook (Jr.) bought land from (his brother?) Isaac Cook July 10 1804. Land is in Richmond, War deed, (41:657) Isaac sold land from 1804 to 1829, all in Richmond (Berkshire Co., MA Grantor Index, FHL film 872,066.) He bought land from 1804 to 1829, all in Richmond. (Berkshire Co., MA Grantee Index, FHL film 872,067.) FAMILY: Isaac took on guardianship of his handicapped brother John: "David Chapin and Isaac Cook of Richmond, relations of John Cook of the same…represent that the said John Cook is a non-compos or distracted person and incapable to take care of himself. They therefore request that inquisition thereof be made and a guardian appointed to the said John Cook as the law in such cases directs. Dated at Richmond 5 December 1796. "Isaac Cook appeared and took upon himself the guardianship of the said John Cook and a bond is taken of the said Isaac for the faithful discharge…” (Probates of Berkshire County, Mass, Vol. 10, p. 2, FHL film 873.485) Another petition was made for expenses for the support of John Cook from April 1808 to 8 July 1812. Amount is $1,669.29 for present and future. Real estate was noted to have been sold June 20, 1808. The amount was granted by the court to Isaac Cook. (Probates of Berkshire Co, Vol. 16, p. 315, FHL film 876,295) 1800 CENSUS: Richmond, Berkshire, MA. Isaac Cook . He has one male under ten, and two 26-44. Four females, two under ten, one 26-44 and one over 45 (Could be Isaac's mother.) Also in Richmond are David Chapin (his sister's husband) Dan, Ralph and Manassah Collins, relatives of Isaac's mother. (Roll: 13; Page: 208; Image: 166.) 1810 CENSUS: Pittsfield, Berkshire, MA: Isaac Cook has 5 males in the household. One is under ten, one 10-15 and three are 26-45. (Isaac is 37 and John is 43) There are four females. One is under ten, two are 16-25 and one is 26-45. Also in Pittsfield are his sister Lydia and husband David Chapin and their two sons Nathan and Walter. (Roll: 17; Page: 122; Image: 97.00.) 1820 CENSUS: Richmond, Berkshire, MA. 110002-30011 There are four males, one under ten, one 10-16 and two over 45. There are five females, three under ten, one 26-45 and one over 45. Living nearby is his brother-in-law David Chapin and next to David is his son Nathan Chapin. One is 15-20, one is 20-30 and one 50-60 (Isaac is 57; John is not there.) Six females: two are 5-10, two are 10-15, one is 15-20, and one is 30-40. if Priscilla was in the household, she must have given her age under 40. (Roll: 62; Page: 448.) PROBATE: At Probate court held at Lenox July 7, 1835 Pricilla Cook of Richmond appeared to show her "husband Isaac died 24 June 1835, leaving the following children and herself at law: Ashbel Cook, now resident in the territory of Michigan; Isaac, resident in said Richmond, of law full age." Mary and Amanda are minors above 14; Laura and Lucy are minors under 14, all at Richmond. She asks that Isaac and Rechanah (Ruhamah) be appointed administrators. (Berkshire Probates Vol. 40, pp. 77-78, FHL 873493 .) Inventory recorded July 16, 1835 is on pp. 146-149, same volume. Isaac owns 128 acres in Richmond, including buildings thereon. He owns 30 acres in Hancock, 1 1/2 acres near Dan. Crittenden and 3 1/4 near Noah Rossetor, totaling $4,341.50. His personal estate is valued at $1,182.50. Notes against his estate are many, equalling $9,572.12. Among them are A. Cone ($250.00) and C. Goodale ($250.00) who are brothers-in-law, E. Dwight ($250.00), Ashbel Cook ($350.00) his son, and W. Cook ($100.00) (probably his brother Walter.) After settlement of the estate the balance of $4,826,.31 "to be divided among his widow and children, viz Ashbel, Ruhamah, Isaac, Mary, Amanda, Laura, Lucy." It is noted there has been advanced to said Ashbel by said intestate in his life time the part portion of his share in said estate, the sum of $1,450, $900.00 of which appears from his receipt dated August 20, 1832, and the residue from charges on his book in the handwriting of Clearea Williams, Esq, by direction of said intestate."
