Note | BIRTH: Year 1772 was calculated from death record. Also found on Pedigree Resource #35 Pin #516041 WEST BURLINGTON, OTSEGO, NY It is known his brother Daniel was in West Burlington by 1800. Although David and Uriah are not identified as brothers of Daniel, we know they were. "Uriah Chapin was an early settler in Burlington. David Chapin settled near Edmeston Centre, where he conducted a tanner. A son, Laurentine, lives on the homestead." "Daniel Chapin and his wife emigrated from Richmond, Berkshire Col, Mass, in about the year 1800, and settled one and a half miles west of the Centre on lands of the Cooper patent. He died in 1837, aged 63... (History of Otsego Co., NY, FHL Q-book 974.774 H2h, p. 144.) The Chapin brothers came to West Burlington about 1800 with their cousin Pitman Cook, also from Richmond. (History of Otsego Co. pp. 99-100) OCCUPATION: He and his father were tanners (See Berkshire Land Records and History of Otsego Co., NY p. 144.) WILL: David Chapin of Edmeston, dated Dec. 14, 1821. Probated Feb. 12, 1822. Mentions second wife Hannah and first wife Phebe. Mentions sons Samuel J., Laurentin and David and daughter Mary Chapin. Executors are Amos G. Graves and Martin Lee of Edmeston. Witnesses are Moses B. Smith, Silas Burleson and Sophia Churchill. DEATH: "David (Chapin) Esq. died Feb. 6, 1822 at Edmeston, age 50 (2/18) (A Collection of Abstracts from Otsego County, N.Y. Newspaper Obituaries, 1808-1875, FHL 974.774 V48b, p. 24.) That puts his birth 1772. RESEARCH: Walter H. Chapin was town Supervisor at Edmeston Village in 1855. It is known David Chapin was in Edmeston. Perhaps this is his son. |
