Note | BIRTH: Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records, Enfield is not in the Published volumes of the Barbour Collection of Vital Records. This is the main index on microfilm FHL 2901. "David Chapin b. Sept 19, 1746, son of David and Thankful (Prior)" citing Enfield Vital records 1-B:63. REVOLUTIONARY WAR: David Chapin a veteran of the war (The History of Pittsfield, Mass, p. 516, p. 190 (FHL 974.41/P2 H2s.) 1790 CENSUS: Richmond, Berkshire, MA. He is found in the index under David Chapins. In his household are 2 males over 16, 4 males under 16 and 3 females. (Roll: M637_4; Image: 0544, p. 503, Ancestry.com) 1800 CENSUS: Richmond, Berkshire, MA: There is one male under 10, two 10-15, two 16-25 and one over 45. There is one female under ten, two 10-16 and one over 45. Several houses away is Asaph Dewey, possibly father of Abel who married Sally nine years later. On the same page is Isaac Cook, Lydia's brother. (Roll: 13; Page: 208; Image: 166, Ancestry.com) 1810 CENSUS: Pittsfield, Berkshire, MA. 00501-00101 In his household are five males 16-25 and one over 45. There is one female 16-25 and one over 45. Living also in Pittsfield are his brother-in-law Isaac Cook and sons Nathan and Walter Chapin. (Roll: 17; Page: 122; Image: 97.00, Ancestry.com) 1820 CENSUS: Richmond, Berkshire, MA 011102-01002 One male 10-16, one male 16-18, one male 18-26, and two males over 45. One female 10-16 and two females over 45. Living next door is Isaac Cook. David was missed in the index. (Roll: M33_48; Page: 164; Image: 107, Ancestry.com) 1830 CENSUS: He is not there in the house between his son Nathan and his brother-in-law Isaac Cook. In that place is Levi Crittenden, father-in-law of his son Nathan. Levi bought the land from Isaac Cook, which means the Chapins were probably living on Isaac Cook's land. JOHN COOK PROBATE: "David Chapin and Isaac Cook of Richmond, relations of John Cook of the same…represent that the said John Cook is a non-compos or distracted person and incapable to take care of himself. They therefore request that inquisition thereof be made and a guardian appointed to the said John Cook as the law in such cases directs. Dated at Richmond 5 December 1796. (Probates of Berkshire County, Mass, Vol. 10, p. 2, FHL film 873.485) RICHMOND, BERKSHIRE, MA Land Records: David Chapin had land records from 1773 to 1816. In each record he was known as "David Chapin of Richmond, tanner." He had land dealings with his son Nathan (57:490-492) and Nathan is witness in 1816 (59:34). He had numerous land dealings with Tyrannous and Manassah Collins, his wife's uncles, (11:216), who also served as witness (20:403). He was neighbor to Manassah (20:403; 21:579). His wife Lucy is named as the dau. of Walter Cook when they sold her inherited land 26 April 1785 (21:576). He bought land from his wife's sister and her husband which was "bequeathed to said Lucy Norton in the last will and testament of Mr. Walter Cook, late of Richmond, dec'd." 26 April 1785 (21:576, FHL 872,086). DEATH: "David (Chapin) Feb. 15, 1826, age 81, (G.R.2.) (Vital Records of Richmond Ma to 1850, FHL 974.41/R1 V28r, Deaths, p. 90.) RESEARCH: There is a David Chapin with Lydia's nephew Pitman in Otsego County, N.Y., apparently from the same family because Lemuel and David are part of a large Chapin family there. But it is not the same David Chapin because he was born in 1772 and died Feb. 6, 1822. ("Burlington Flats, N.Y., Inscriptions," NEHGS Register, Vol. 111, p. 190, FHL 974 B2ne.) |

Note | On Ancestral File the date is given 7 April 1776. However, the death record of their oldest son David shows he was born in 1772, so the date is more likely about 1770. It is known the family was in Richmond before 1776. A search of records shows there is no marriage record either in Goshen or in Richmond. It also did not take place in Enfield. |
