Marriage	This record states Betsy was from Becket.
Note	BIRTH: A Genealogical Record of the Birchard-Burchard Family, McMillan Family, Rear Family, Edna Manning Laughter, Ed. Salem Oregon, 1962, p. 24. "Betsey (dau James Birchard and Abigail King) b. June, 1772, Married Walter Cook of Richmond, Mass." She was 78 in 1850 when she signed a deposition. IGI gives the date June, 1772. Ancestral File (AFN: 16RG-SRM) lists the whole family with birth years, all born in Becket. It also gives her marriage date to Walter Cook. However, I'm not sure the family lived in Becket when she was born. A church record there (p. 357) shows James Birchard received to full communion 28 August 1771 by the Church of Christ in Bolton. (FHL 234,563, item 7). The family may have gone to Bolton and then returned to Becket soon enough for all the daughters to marry there. Bolton church records for that time period are non-existent, so Betsey's birth may not have been recorded. We know she is the daughter of James Burchard of Becket. "Walter Cook of Richmond and Betsey Cook, wife of said Walter... sold for $475.00 to Alonzo Dewey of Becket land in Becket...containing 60 acres more or less, being the two acres and all the land which was assigned to said Betsey in the distribution of her father James Burchard's estate, as recorded in the Probate Office at Lenox in Book No. 24, p. 104." Dated 3 April 1827. She is the granddaughter of Solomon King and sister of James Birchard Jun.: "Walter Cook and Betty Cook of Richmond” for $85 sold James Birchard Jun. of Becket, gent., land in Becket…”all the right and share which belongs to the said Betty Cook as one of the heirs at law of Solomon King, late of Becket, aforesaid, dec’d in and to certain lands and other real estate lying in Becket aforesaid or in any other place which she owns in common with the said James Birchard, Jun. and other heirs at law of the said Solomon King. Her name is mis-spelled Betty Cook five times, 6 July 1811, (Vol. 50, p. 92, FHL 872,102) On the 1800 Census she was 26-45 (b. 1754-1774.) On the 1830 Census she was 50-60 (b. 1770-1780) DEPOSITION, 1850: "I Betsey Cook of the town of Richmond in said County aged seventy-eight years, being duly sworn to depose and say that I am the widow of Walter Cook, late of the said town of Richmond, deceased. My husband, the said Walter Cook, dec’d, had a brother whose name is Pitman C. Cook. Said Pitman formerly had a wife and family..." (Application #29,731, FHL 970,639) Dated 2 April 1850 1850 CENSUS: Living in Lenox with her son George Cook who is age 31. She is 75. Also living in the household are Florilla Cook, age 38; Zarah or Jerah (Jerusha?) Cook, 48; Betsey Cook, 53; and a farm hand born in Ireland, James Doland, age 19. (Roll: M432_306; Page: 28; Image: 57, Ancestry.com) 1860 CENSUS: The family still living in Richmond, Berkshire, MA. George Cook is 41, Florilla is 49, Betsey is 63, Sarah is 61, Richard Conklin, a farm laborer age 25. (Roll: M653_488; Page: 294; Image: 297, Ancestry.com) Betsey their mother is no longer there.
