Note | BIRTH: Goshen Vital Records Vol 1, p. 224. (Family History Library film 2970.) Recorded "Lam" in the original, it was extended to "Lam"(uel) in the typed record. No doubt it means Joseph son of Lambert Cook. GOSHEN, LITCHFIELD, CT Joseph Cook of Sheffield, Berkshire, MA sold for 21 pounds to James Thomson of Goshen 37 3/4 acres lying in southwest Goshen near the west branch of the Shippage River. "That land is part of a 50-acre lott and part of a lott of 17 1/2 acres both of which were laid out to Joseph Cook, formerly of said Goshen, deceased. (no bounds) Feb. 10, 1786, Vol 7, p. 199 FHL film 4420, item 1. He is the only known descendant named Joseph Cook, and it is known his father moved the family to Berkshire County MA. REVOLUTIONARY WAR: Joseph and Solomon Cook of Sheffield served in the Revolutionary War (History of Berkshire Co., Mass, FHL 974.41 H2hb, p. 206.) 1790 CENSUS: Stephentown, Albany, New York. Joseph Cook has one male over 16, one under 16, and 1 female in the household. Next door are Lambert his father, and Levi, his brother. HIS FATHER'S WILL: Joseph Cook (it almost looks like James) named in the will of Lambert Cook dated 26 Dec. 1800 and proved the next year at Stephentown, Rensselaer, New York. Joseph Cook and Henry Tucker (son-in-law) were named as executors. DEATH: A Joseph Cook died at Sheffield, Berkshire, Mass where the Cooks were known to have been. However, Joseph Cook was living next to his father at Stephentown, Rensselaer, NY on the 1790 Census. If this Joseph died earlier, there must have been another son named Joseph for whom we have no record. Levi is named as the oldest son in their father's will, so it's certainly possible. However, until we find the true death date of the Joseph Cook in Rensselaer County, we won't know which Joseph this is. |
