Submitted by Phineas Wolcott Cook, great nephew, From records of Phineas Wolcott Cook, Logan Temple Endowments for the Dead, Vol. B, p. 254, #8980, Family History Library film 177,956) REVOLUTIONARY WAR: In 1776 Amasa's name appeared on a document in Goshen, showing he lived there at that time. ("Detroit Society for Genealogical Research," Vol 35, #4, Summer, 1972, Family History Library book 9767.4 C4de, Vol 35, p. 201) Muster roll of December 1776 (original spelling retained.) To the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut now sitting at Middletown in said State in pursuant to a late resolve made by your Honors in respecting of raising vollunteers in defense of our country, and whereas I being one appointed for that purpose I humbly begg leave to report as follows: That on the 23rd day instant I have (been) to the towns of Goshen, Torrington and Winchester to meet together in order to see who would enlist in so Great and Good a cause as was requested by your Honors…Those who have freely and voluntarily enlisted according to the respective names have I wrote on this sheet of paper and then proposed and warned them all to appear and make chois of their Comissions officers for said company as those towns had noted and signed to joyn together and accordingly meet according to said warning and proceeded to choose a Captain for said company and by the assistance of Col. Epaphras Sheldon and other gentlemen then present to lead them to said choise and they made choise of Major Medad Hills of Goshen for their Captain….Dated this 6th day of December 1776 by Cymaer Collons. We the subscribers have and do voluntarily engage and undertake to march as soon as possible for the relief and succor of the Continental Army under such officers as shall be chosen by the company to which we belong and are not be held in said service more than two months unless the same love of our country which prompts our undertaking shall incline us to continue longer.” Forty shillings to be advanced to each soldier and noncommissioned officers. Each soldier to outfit himself, including his own gun. Officers to provide carriages to transport baggage of soldiers. 44 names, including Amasa Cook and Joel Gaylord (his future brother-in-law.) (Sylvester Judd Index to the Revolutionary War, Family History Library film 3538, pp. 138, 139) 1. Enlisted Dec 23, 1776 in the Minute Men and Volunteers from Goshen and Torrington, Litchfield, Ct. The date was given December 31, 1776 for the "Relief of the Continental Army." Those previously enlisted were again recruited as they returned home. Many signed on for the duration of the war. (Sylvester Judd, Index to the Revolutionary War, FHL film 3538, p. 138a, b. Also found in "Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the War of the Rev." Family History Library book 974.6/M2ca, p. 612.) 2. Enlisted in a company from Goshen, Winchester and Torrington (p. 136 Hibbard's "History of Goshen.") The date given was Dec. 23, 1776 in "Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the War of the Rev. (Family History Library book 974.6/M2ca, p. 612.) This record states Amasa was "of Winchester," so it may not be the Amasa in this family because Goshen was listed separately. Medad Hills of Goshen was also in the Winchester column, promoted to Lt Col. of the 17th Regt. in May, 1777, commanded by Oliver Wolcott of Litchfield. 3. Enlisted at Adams, Berkshire, Mass. ("Mass Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution") In "Cooks or Cookes in Massachusetts before 1810," it says "he enlisted to serve in the Rev. War when he was visiting relatives, a brother Phillip Cook, and an Uncle Walter Cook in Richmond." 4. Mass. Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution p. 917-18 states "Amasa Cook, Private, Capt. Enos Parker's co., Col. Benjamin Symond's regt.; enlisted Aug. 14, 1777; discharged Aug. 19, 1777; service 6 days; regiment detached from Berkshire Co. militia to reinforce army at Bennington; also, Private, Capt. Daniel Brown's co. commanded by Lieut. William White, Col. Miles Powell's (Berkshire Co.) regt.; enlisted July 23, 1779; discharged Sept 1, 1779; service 1 mo. 10 days, at New Haven; also, Corporal, Capt. Asa Barns's 1st co., Col. Israel Chapen's 3rd regt.; enlisted Oct. 16, 1779; discharged Nov. 21, 1779; service 1 mo. 10 days, travel included; company raised to reinforce Continental Army for 3 months; also, Capt. William White's co., (late) Col. Brown's (Berkshire Co.) regt.; enlisted July 18, 1780; discharged Oct. 22, 1780; service 3 mos. 10 days, travel included, at Stone Arabia, N.Y." (Family History Library book 974.4 M23m Vol. 3, pp. 917-18.) The last item is also recorded in In the General Index to the Revolutionary War (882851) War Dept. Office of the Adj. Gen., Old Records Dept., the following entries are given: Amasa Cook - 3 Regt. Mass Militia. Corporal (#4381) 5. Listed in "Register of Soldiers and Patriots Buried in Litchfield," by Joyce Mackenzie Cropsey, Mary Floyd Tallmadge Chapter, D.A.R., 1912, Family History Library book 974.61 V22c, p. 36, as a Revolutionary War Soldier. Identified as "son of Daniel of Goshen; b (1749) d (12-24-1821), #22." In The History of Goshen (Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h) his Revolutionary War Record is stated thus: "Titus and Joel Gaylord, Amasa Cook served in the Militia to New York (City)." (p. 136) GOSHEN In "The History of the Town of Goshen," by A. G. Hibbard, it states that he had only one child who lived. Sally was born Dec. 28, 1752. (Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h<b>, </b>p. 450) "Amasa Cook of Goshen: sold land in Cornwall (boundary on Goshen) Jan. 5 and April 7, 1788 (Land Records of Cornwall, Family History Library film 3959, Vol 5, 1783-1789, p. 182, 277.) Amasa and Daniel lived near the border of Cornwall, several miles from the center of Goshen. Enumerated in the 1790 Census as Litchfield, the area became the ecclesiastical society of Milton. 1800 CENSUS Goshen, Connecticut as found in Ancestry.com. Males: 1 is 16-25; 1 is over 45. Females: 1 is under 10; one is 26-45 and 1 is over 45. DEATH Amasa Cook died 4 December 1821 at Goshen.
