Note | REVOLUTIONARY WAR The Pension Application Record for Moses Bartholomew (S-15314, Family History Library film 970162) states he enlisted April 1775 in Capt Beebe's Company "of Litchfield." The Regt. commanded by Major David Welsh of Litchfield. He "received his bounty at the time of enlistment." He was ordered to Ticonderoga, N.Y. and marched with P. Company about the middle of May to Albany, "so-called North River" and from there to Ticonderoga. Garrisoned by the "Green Mountain Boys," and stayed there until given a verbal discharge late in the fall. Moses Gibbs of Litchfield town verified in a letter that Moses Bartholomew was in that unit. James Baldwin of Litchfield town also verified he was in this unit. James said they marched through Goshen to Half Moon, N.Y. and then to Ticonderoga. He was a drummer in the Revolutionary War. Said to have fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Record of the Bartholomew Family: Historical, Genealogical, Biographical, by George Wells Bartholomew, p. 110. In May, 1776 he enlisted in the Connecticut militia under Capt. Amos Barnes of Litchfield on an alarm from the city of New York. He was drummer in that unit, and no doubt was in close association with Lydia's brothers Amasa and Daniel and future brother-in-law Joel Gaylord. His sister Phebe residing in Berksire Mass verified he had served in the militia in Litchfield. She didn't mention he had enlisted in Berkshire. VERMONT Land Records: They must have moved to Vershire soon after the Revolutionary War. He bought land in Vershire, Vermont August 20, 1785. In that record (Vershire Land Records, Family History Library film 29024, item 1, p. 25) he was known as "Moses Bartholomew of Vershire, yeoman." Moses Bartholomew of Vershire had many land transactions. The last was on March 13, 1806 when his son Oliver was bound to care for Moses and Lydia for the rest of their lives and apparently took over the homestead. (Vershire Land Records, Family History Library film 29024, Vol 6, p. 503) "Moving soon after his marriage from Goshen Ct. to Ely, Vermont, he settled as early as 1786 in Vershire where his wife joined the church in 1792. He was a farmer, a Whig, and a member of the Baptist Church. He was of average height, stout, strong and energetic. (Record of the Bartholomew Family: Historical, Genealogical, Biographical, by George Wells Bartholomew, Family History Library film 301118, p. 110) Moses Bartholomew moved to Vermont in 1786 and died Feb. 11, 1839. (The History of Goshen, CT , with Genealogies and Biographies, by A.G. Hibbard, Lewis M. Norton, Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h) DEATH Moses Bartholomew died September 3, 1755 in Vermont. (The History of Goshen, CT , with Genealogies and Biographies, by A.G. Hibbard, Lewis M. Norton, Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h.) His brother Oliver was also in Vershire. |
