Note | BIRTH "Connecticut Births and Christenings, 1649-1906," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F7WJ-7BH : 3 December 2014), Phebe Hall born 26 Dec 1727, daughter of Jacob Hall and Elizabeth; citing ; FHL microfilm unknown. MARRIAGE (1) Phebe Hall of Wallingford married Joseph Cook Junior October 6, 1748 at Wallingford. He was the son of Joseph Cook Sr. and Eleanor Johnson. After moving to Goshen with the Cook family, Joseph Jr. died June of 1850, leaving his widow Phebe Cook and a son Joseph Cook III. MARRIAGE DOCUMENTATION "Families of Ancient New Haven," Vol 1, by D L. Jacobus, 1923, p. 440. Ref. is Wallingford Vital Records. "Joseph Cook married Phebe Hall October 6, 1748 at Wallingford." MARRIAGE (2) "Phebe Cook married Eli Pettibone" 21 February 1751 at Goshen, Litchfield, Connecticut. He was born 13 December 1724 and died possibly in Bennington County, Vermont where several of his children had moved. MARRIAGE DOCUMENTATION: "Marriages in Goshen," Family History Library book 974.61/G1 V2h. Also in Goshen Vital Records Vol 1, p. 260. (Family History Library film 2970.) Phebe would have been age 21 at this marriage. The next year Phebe's sister-in-law Hannah Cook married Eli's brother Roger, which makes this marriage more likely. It is noted in the Pettibone History that the Cook sisters married Pettibone brothers. Unfortunately in History of Goshen, p. 574 it confuses Phebe with her sister-in-law Phebe Cook, daughter of Joseph Cook Senior, even listing their children. The record simply states "Eli Pettibone m. Phebe Cook." (The History of Goshen, CT , with Genealogies and Biographies, by A.G. Hibbard, Lewis M. Norton, Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h) We now know it was Phebe (Hall) Cook. "Eli Pettibone married Phebe Cook Feb. 21, 1751. He was Constable in Norfolk, Conn.,and the town records say he was fined for taking timber from public land."(Genealogy of the Pettibone Family, by Fayette Pettibone: Chicago: Brown, Pettibone and Kelly, 1885, Page 20-21) Children of Eli Pettibone and Phebe Cook 1. Lois November 25, 1751 2. Eli October 6, 1754 3. Eli October 9, 1755 4. Jacob 8 January 1760 at Norfolk 5. Seth January 1753 Additional proof of this marriage: "Roger Pettibone married the sister (actually Hannah, the sister-in-law) of his brother Eli's wife June 25, 1752, and (2) Susanna Tisdale March 16, 1764." (Genealogy of the Pettibone Family, by Fayette Pettibone: Chicago: Brown, Pettibone and Kelly, 1885, Page 10) (JSP note: Obviously it was known in town and recorded in the genealogies that the Pettibone brothers married Cook sisters. It was long thought this marriage was for Phebe, daughter of Joseph Senior. However, we now know Phebe Hall, who married Joseph Junior and was left a widow at age 22 after Joseph died, married Eli Pettibone the next year. |
