Note | BIRTH Goshen Vital Records Vol 1, p. 271. (Family History Library film 2970.) Eli Pettibone, born October 9, 1754, Son of "Elis Pettibone." Another entry in Goshen Vital Records: "Eli Pettibone, son of Eli and Phebe Pettibone was born 6 Oct. 1764. Goshen Vital Records Vol 1, p. 271. (Family History Library film 2970.) I believe 1764 is a mistake because we know the Eli born in 1754/55 survived. Eli Pettibone is noted to be son of Eli in The History of Goshen, CT , with Genealogies and Biographies, by A.G. Hibbard, Lewis M. Norton, Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h p. 451. Eli Pettibone Jr. listed in Cook Genealogy from "Cooks in Mass. Before 1810" (manuscript in possession of Janet Porter) REVOLUTIONARY WAR: Revolutionary War Pension Application: Pensioner name: Eli Pettibone, b. 1755; His wife was Hannah Hix, who applied for pension: Pensioner Given Name: Hannah; Service: Mass. Vt.; Pension Number: W. 26,881 Pettibone, Eli, Private, (b. 1755) Capt. Ebenezer Newell's Co., Col. Symonds's Regt.; service, 21 days; company marched from Lanesborough to Manchester July 9, 1777, on an alarm; roll certified at Lanesborough; also, Capt. Shubael Willmark's (Willmarth's) Co., Col. Benjamin Symonds's (Berkshire Co.) Regt.; enlisted April 26; discharged May 19 [year not given, probably 1778]; service, 24 days; company called out by order of Maj. Gen. Gates to march to Saratoga. Information about the service of Eli Pettibone Jr. is found in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution, Volume 12 "Eli Pettibone was in Col. Warner's regiment in 1776." (History of Norfolk, Litchfield County, Connecticut, 1744-1900, compiled by Theron Wilmot Crissey, Family History Library book 974.61/N1 H2c) 1790 CENSUS Eli Junior, his brother Seth and their cousin Abel (son of Roger) are in Manchester, Bennington, Vermont, all in the age bracket of 26-45. They were all born 1854 and 1853. Manchester, Vermont: Eli Pettibone (Junior) living next to Abel and Seth Pettibone, all age 26-45 years old. Also in Eli's household is a female age 26-45. There is a male with them, age 16-26 and a child under 10, (Family History Library book 974 X22jnv 1790) PENSION PAPERS REVOLUTIONARY WAR Pension application: Burlington VT, 1832. Eli Pettibone died August 20, 1842. (Fold 3 Website) Page 1: Eli Pettibone pension application, 1832 states he died August 20, 1842. The pension gives the name Eli Pettibone Jr. on page 1, but I think it actually is Eli Sr. because his wife Hannah Pettibone signed it on page 7, on July 7, 1838. Explanation for the error is on page 43. Page 4: Eli Pettibone served in the Massachusetts line Page 7: Signed by Hannah Pettibone July 7, 1838 Page 8: Widow Hannah Pettibone signed May 12, 1843 Page 9: Eli Pettibone in Capt. Ebanezer Newell's payroll. Hannah Pettibone died before Oct. 17, 1844 Samuel and his wife Rhoda were named, but I'm not sure why Daniel Hix, brother of Hannah was named, proving her surname was Hix. Page 41: Affidavit showing the service of Eli Sr. was credited to Eli Jr. He also has an uncle named Eli Pettibone. Eli and his brother moved from Massachusetts to Vermont in 1779. Eli (Jr.) is 14 years older than his brother. They both served in the war before moving to Vermont. At the time Eli (Sr.) was age 52 (making it certain this record is for Eli Sr. who was born in 1724.) At the time of application Eli Pettibone was serving as Justice of the Peace, and probably never was in the military after the war. Page 42: Both Eli Jr. and Eli Sr. served in the war, but Eli Jr. was not recorded. Page 43: Signed by John S. Pettibone. He believes Eli Pettibone Jr. signed as Eli Pettibone Sr. because his father had died by then and therefore he was Sr. Page 53: Pension rejected. DEATH His Revolutionary War pension stated he died August 20, 1842. Since he applied at Burlington Vermont in 1832, he likely was there when he died. (Fold 3 research) |
