Note | BIRTH: Eli Pettibone, son of Samuel and Mary (Porter) Pettibone, was born Dec. 13, 1724. (Genealogy of the Pettibone Family, by Fayette Pettibone: Chicago: Brown, Pettibone and Kelly, 1885, Family History Library film 1429792 Item 9, p. 10) Online at https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE1156559. NORFOLK, LITCHFIELD, CT History of Norfolk, Litchfield County, Connecticut, 1744-1900, p. 46-62: Eli Pettibone was in Norfolk. On Sept. 21, 1758 Eli, Giles and Isaac Pettibone petitioned for a church at Norfolk. (History of Norfolk, Litchfield County, Connecticut, 1744-1900, p. 46-62) "Near the meeting-house there were erected what were called Sabbath-day-houses. There is a record of a vote granting leave to John Turner, Jedediah Richards, William Walter, Eli Pettibone and Nehemiah Lawrence to build a Sabbath-day-house and a horse-house on a part of the land that had been purchased as a site for the meeting-house." "Voted and did chuse Eli Pettibone for first Constable. And did chuse Samuel Mills for second..." History of Norfolk, Litchfield,CT p. 7 On December 12, 1758 the 44 men who had settled in Norfolk, Litchfield, CT met to vote on issues relevant to the establishment of their town. Isaac, Eli, and Giles Pettibone on the list of 44 p. 63 Isaac, Giles and Eli Pettibone listed as Surveyor of Highways, Tithingman, and Collector of Rates. 1790 CENSUS His children Eli Junior and Seth and their cousin Abel (son of Roger) are in Manchester, Bennington, Vermont, all in the age bracket of 26-45. They were all born 1854 and 1853. But Eli Senior is not there and may have died by then. 1800 Census Bennington, Manchester, Vermont. Eli Pettibone and his wife are age 45+ with an older male and female in the household. Also on the same page are Seth (Eli's son) and Able (Roger's son), each with young families. BENNINGTON, VERMONT Eli Pettibone, son of Samuel and Mary (Porter) Pettibone, was born Dec. 13, 1724. (Genealogyof the Pettibone Family, by Fayette Pettibone: Chicago: Brown, Pettibone and Kelly, 1885, Family History Library film 1429792 Item 9, p. 10) On line at https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE1156559. He died possibly in Bennington County, Vermont where several of his children had moved. No record has been found of either his death or the death of his wife. FAMILY Children of Eli Pettibone and Phebe Cook, recorded in Genealogy of the Pettibone Family. (Genealogy of the Pettibone Family, by Fayette Pettibone: Chicago: Brown, Pettibone and Kelly, 1885, Family History Library film 1429792 Item 9, p. 10) Online at https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE1156559.) 1. Lois November 25, 1751 2. Eli October 6, 1754 3. Eli October 9, 1755 4. Jacob 5. Seth MARRIAGE Eli married Phebe Hall Cook, whose first husband was Joseph, son of Joseph and Abigail (Johnson) Cook of Goshen. She was born December 26, 1727 at Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut. MARRIAGE DOCUMENTATION "Marriages in Goshen," Family History Library book 974.61/G1 V2h. Also in Goshen Vital Records Vol 1, p. 260. (Family History Library film 2970.) "Eli Pettibone and Phebe Cook were married Feb. 21, 1751 at Goshen." It was noted in Genealogy of the Pettibone Family, by Fayette Pettibone that Phebe (Hall) Cook was Hannah Cook’s sister (in-law) by Phebe’s marriage to her first husband, Joseph Cook. Joseph's sister Hannah married Eli's brother Roger the next year, which makes this marriage all the more likely. The Pettibones were close neighbors to the Cook family, and signed the probate records of both Joseph Sr. and Joseph Jun. Also in History of Goshen, "Eli Pettibone married Phebe Cook Feb. 21, 1751." (The History of Goshen, CT , with Genealogies and Biographies, by A.G. Hibbard, Lewis M. Norton, Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h, p. 574.) Additional proof of this marriage:"Roger Pettibone married the sister (they should have said sister-in-law) of his brother Eli's wife June 25, 1752, and (2) Susanna Tisdale March 16, 1764." (Genealogy of the Pettibone Family, by Fayette Pettibone: Chicago: Brown, Pettibone and Kelly, 1885, Page 10) (JSP note: Obviously it was known in town and recorded in the genealogies that the Pettibone brothers married a Cook sister and sister-in-law. However, because Hannah and Phebe were later thought to be sisters, many thought Phebe was the daughter of Joseph and Eleanor and that it was she who married Eli Pettibone. However, she was still married to Timothy Gaylord, as clearly shown in the record.) RESEARCH: Also in Norfolk: Giles, Augustus, Jonathan, Abel, Isaac, Abijah, Daniel, Elijah, Philo, Samuel, Josiah Pettibone. Eli has a brother named Jonathan, some are his nephews. Eli Pettibone was Constable in Norfolk, Conn., and the town records say he was fined for taking timber from public land." (Genealogy of the Pettibone Family, by Fayette Pettibone: Chicago: Brown, Pettibone and Kelly, 1885, Page 20-21) |
