"The inventory of Judith Birdsall Cooke's estate records that she was the owner of a silk hood. No woman was allowed to own a silk hood unless her husband was worth 200 pounds. Having possessed one she would be considered to be a well-to-do woman. The law prohibited a woman from wearing one unless proof of wealth was proficient. This law was still in force in 1676."
