Henry and Judith (Birdsale), 6:7m:1647, (FHL book 974.45/S1 V2e.) SALEM There were two men named John Cooke of Salem. The following source identifies which was the son of Henry Cooke: Essex Antiquarian - Vol. 4, p. 171 - Henry Cook property: “Dr. Daniel Weld House. The northern half of this lot (down to the dashes on the map) was the western portion of the original lot of Henry Cook in 1649. He died in 1661, and his widow, Judith Cook, conveyed the northern half of this part to Joshua Rea of Salem May 21, 1662 ((Essex Registry of Deeds, book 2, leaf 37.) The southern half of the northern half Mr. Cook’s son John, of Salem, blacksmith, conveyed to Thomas Maude of Salem, tailor, March 7, 1671; (Essex Registry of Deeds, book 3, leaf 157) The other John Cooke had children and grandchildren of the same names so they are confusing. This proves the other John Cooke's family, beginning with John Cooke Jr.: Vol. 7, p. 165 - John Cook, Jr. of Salem, mariner bought a house and lot Dec. 19, 1706 (19:113) Mr. Cook died in 1721, and in the division of his estate the house, then called “old” and “small,” and land around it were assigned to his son Joseph Cook. In 1746, the house was occupied by Nathaniel Archer. Mr. Cook probably removed the house before 1770. Vol 7, Essex Antiquarian, p. 116 - Essex registry of Deeds, 5;69 show an affidavit of John Cooke, blacksmith and William Reeves, slaughterer, both living on the south side of the street, and each aged about sixty years, relative to Captain Flint’s quiet possession of the premises (See Deeds 18:183) SOURCES: Baptism: GS #177882 p. 302, Entry #11762; Endowment: GS #178007 p. 642, Entry #20408. KING PHILLIP'S WAR: Petition of the Salem Troop for Commissioned Officers in 1678 includes the names of John Cooke , Isaac Cooke, and Henry Cooke and their brother-in-law John Pudney (N.E.H.G.R., Vol 10, p. 66, "Porter Family," F.H.L. book 976 B2ne, Vol 10.)
