Death: Sep. 17, 1752 Cheshire New Haven County Connecticut, USA Mary was the dau. of Peter and Mary Preston Mallory. The Mallory lineage can be traced back to 1092 in England to Richard Mallore." (Families of Ancient New Haven, Vol 1, by Donald Lines Jacobus, 1923, p. 435. Ref. is Old Graveyard in Cheshire. She was 96 years old. MARRIAGES Vital Records for the three marriages of Mary Mallory: Mary Mallory is recorded with vital records in the book <i>Families of Ancient New Haven</i>, by D. L. Jacobus, Vol. 6, p. 1511, image 235 on Ancestry.com. The following information is given: Eli Roberts of West Haven married Mary Mallory 14 July 1678 at New Haven, New Haven, CT, daughter of Peter and Mary (Preston) Mallory (New Haven Vital Records). Mary was born 28 November 1656 in New Haven, Connecticut (New Haven Vital Records). Eli died about 1693. "Mary married second in Wallingford on 14 July 1696 - Henry Cook" (Jacobus made a mistake. Wallingford Vital Records recorded correctly it was Henry's brother Samuel Cook). Her second husband Samuel Cook died in March of 1703. (<i>Families of Ancient New Haven</i>, Vol 1 by Donald Lines Jacobus, 1923, p. 435.) "Jeremiah How Sr. married Mary Cook, widow, April 9, 1705" (Wallingford Land and Vital Records to 1716, Family History Library film 6018) MARRIAGE (1) Eli Roberts married Mary Mallory 14 July 1678 at New Haven, New Haven, CT. He was born about 1656 and was of West Haven. He died June, 1693, probably at New Haven. MARRIAGE (1) DOCUMENTATION US & International Marriage Records: Eli Roberts married Mary Mallory 14 July 1678. MARRIAGE (2) Mary Roberts married Samuel Cook July 14, 1696 at Wallingford. He was the son of Henry Cook and Judith Birdsall of England and Salem, Mass. MARRIAGE (2) DOCUMENTATION "Saml Cook married Mary Roberts, by Major Mansfield Jul 14, 1696" (Wallingford Vital Records, p. 161, line 16, Family History Library film 6018) MARRIAGE (3) Mary Cook married Jeremiah How II April 9, 1705. He was born July 8, 1650 at New Haven, the son of Jeremiah I and Elizabeth How. He died 22 September 1740 at New Haven. MARRIAGE (3) DOCUMENTATION "Jeremiah How Sr. married Mary Cook, widow, April 9, 1705" (Wallingford Land and Vital Records to 1716, Family History Library film 6018) NOTE: The marriages of Samuel Cook and his wives Hope Parker, Mary ____ and Mary Mallory are the subject of two articles in the Boston Transcript, 3 April 1905, #637, by "Westfield." However, the author believed Mary Mallory was his second wife because the second and third wives had the same first name of Mary. It was not known then his second wife died in 1695 before he married (3) Mary Mallory Roberts: "Samuel (2) Cooke, son of Henry (1) Cooke married second July 14, 1696, Mary Roberts, widow of Eli Roberts, with seven Roberts children and Samuel Cooke had eight children by his first wife, Hope Parker, whom he married May 2, 1667, and by second wife had three more children, making eighteen children. Then Samuel Cooke died March 1702 and his widow married again April 9, 1705 Daniel (Jeremiah) Howe. Proved by County Court Records thus: Ely Roberts inventory, taken June 1693, and May, 1695, Court granted Mary Roberts of New Haven right to sell about 30 acres from her husband’s estate, he being insolvent when deceased, leaving seven children for her to bring up. The same records show in 1705, estate of Daniel Howe of Wallingford, Conn., late deceased, to Mary Howe, alias Cooke, executrix of Ely Roberts."(Could this estate paper have been copied incorrectly? The statement is impossible because in 1705 Howe was not deceased and she married Jeremiah Howe, not Daniel-JSP) |
Note | "Saml Cook married Mary Roberts, by Major Mansfield Jul 14, 1696" (Wallingford Vital Records, p. 161, line 16, Family History Library film 6018) Wallingford Marriages Vol. 2, p. 2 (Family History Library film #6052) lists Samuel Cook's marriage to Mary Roberts Jul 14, 1696. Also found in Lucius A. Barbour and Lucius B. Barbour, The Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records (Hartford, Connecticut: Connecticut State Library, 1911-1934), citing Wallingford VR, 1:161. "Cook, Sam[ue]ll, m. Mary Roberts, July 14, 1696, by Major Mansfield." This marriage is the subject of two articles in the Boston Transcript, 3 April 1905, #637, by "Westfield." "Samuel (2) Cooke, son of Henry (1) Cooke married second July 14, 1696, Mary Roberts, widow of Eli Roberts, with seven Roberts children and Samuel Cooke had eight children by his first wife, Hope Parker, whom he married May 2, 1667, and by second wife had three more children, making eighteen children. Then Samuel Cooke died March 1702 and his widow married again April 9, 1705 Daniel Howe. Proved by County Court Records thus: Ely Roberts inventory, taken June 1693, and May, 1695, Court granted Mary Roberts of New Haven right to sell about 30 acres from her husband’s estate, he being insolvent when deceased, leaving seven children for her to bring up. The same records show in 1705, estate of Daniel Howe of Wallingford, Conn., late deceased, to Mary Howe, alias Cooke, executrix of Ely Roberts." The second: 25 Jun 1923 #851: Mary, widow of Eli Roberts Married Samuel Cooke. She married third Jeremiah Howe of New Haven and Wallingford. In the Boston Transcript, 3 April 1905, #637, Mr. "Westfield" states there were only two marriages, and that Mary Roberts was Samuel's second wife after his first wife died. We now know there were 3 marriages, but because both the 2nd and 3rd wives were named Mary there was confusion. Their death dates give the answer. |
Note | Eli Roberts married Mary Mallory 14 July 1678 at New Haven, New Haven, CT. (US & International Marriage Records, found on Ancestry.com, but no source information was provided.) |
Note | "Jeremiah How Sr. married Mary Cook, widow, April 9, 1705" (Wallingford Land and Vital Records to 1716, Family History Library film 6018) Probably his son: "Jeremiah How married Henry Cook's daughter Mary Cook July 7, 1708" (Wallingford Land and Vital Records to 1716, Family History Library film 6018) |
