BIRTH AND PARENTAGE: Early inquiries on which Ancestral File is based listed Mary Tyler as the daughter of William Tyler and Mary Lathrop, born 7 Sept. 1695. That Mary, however, would have been only 14 at the time of her marriage, which isn't likely in 1709. NEHGS research done for Bryson Cook from April to July 2004 proves she is probably the wrong Mary Tyler. "The History of Wallingford, p. 924 states the daughter of William and Mary (the first Tylers in Wallingford) was known to have married Francis Sedgwick on 5 Feb 1734, when she was 39 years old. There is no mention of either Branford or John Burgess. The book "John Lathrop, Arrival in America and Family Tree," 1988, p. (NEHGS book CS 61 K348 1877) gives Mary's husband not as Sedgwick but Francis Guiteau in 1714 when she was 19. (Case 135222, 6 April 2004, Bryson Cook inquiry to the NEHGS, p. 1) Francis and Mary Guiteau were born and married in Wallingford and lived in Woodbury. (Vital Records) Thus, William and Mary were almost certainly not the parents of our Mary Tyler. Since she was of Branford, she was almost certainly the daughter of one of the Branford Tyler families--brothers Peter, George, Francis and Charles. See Francis Notes. CHURCH RECORDS: Mary Tyler, mem. ch. 1702, Branford First Church Records (v. 1, p. 4) The other Mary Tylers mentioned in "The Index Cards to Vital Records of Connecticut Churches" (at NEHGS) are one who died and one who is the daughter of G. Tyler. (George, whose daughter was born 1709.) DEATH: Barbour Collection of Woodbury Vital Records, "Mary Guitteau, widow, died Aug 11, 1774" (1:111) WOODBURY: They were in Woodbury as early as 1732 when her daughter Phebe was born. NOTE: Mary is listed with two husbands and families. Since John Burgess is reported to have died in 1709, that is quite possible, though the two complete families would be impossible. If she did marry Francis Guiteau they were at Wallingford until 1731 or 1732 at which time their next child is born in Woodbury. Her last child is born in Woodbury in 1738, making her 43 years old. It seems likely this marriage took place, and could be documented. The first family should be looked at again. Comfort could have been born after her father died, but not our ancestor James. If there was a second John Burgess in Branford, he should be researched. |

Note | Branford Vital Records, Vol 3 p. 32. There is no evidence this was the Mary Tyler who married John Burgess. However, in a research project done for Bryson Cook by the NEHGS Research Services in 2004, it was concluded that because the marriage took place in Branford, Mary was the daughter of one of the Branford Tyler brothers, Francis, Peter, Charles and George. George's daughter Mary was born 8 April 1709. Because Francis Tyler died leaving an underage child by the name of Mary, and because Francis' brother Peter had no daughter by that name, she is probably the one who married John Burgess. Until the names of other children of Francis's brothers Charles and George are known, we cannot be sure. |
Note | This marriage found in the Ayer-Cooper-Holt Royce family: (www.gencircles.com/users/holayer/1/print/1581/right) If it is the correct Mary Tyler Burgess who married Francis Guiteau, her last four children by her first husband are incorrect. This could be a mistake. |
