Note | BIRTH Robert has not been sealed to parents because we're not certain who they were. It has been said he was born in 1624 ( http://www.esthersscrapbook.com/ConnecticutPorters.htm ) and in 1612." "Born about 1612 in England, the son of a Puritan minister who, on account of his non-conformity had been ejected from the Established Church. We find no record of our Robert's passage but he was an original proprietor at both Hartford and Farmington in 1640 so presumably he was in the colonies a year or two before that. He was later an original proprietor at Waterbury (F1672) where he died and is buried..." (Some Descendants of Robert Porter, Farmington, Connecticut, 1640, Margaret Porter Miller, FHL book 929.273 P835m, p. 1.)This family described and listed in detail, and the book claimed there were no descendants with the surname Porter from Robert except through Thomas. HARTFORD: William S. Porter listed all original settlers of Farmington and indicated whether they had come from Hartford. Robert Porter who died in 1689 and purchased land in Farmington was among those listed. (P. 166, Memorial History of Hartford County: Farmington at history.rays-place.com/Ct/Farmington.pdf) The Book "Farmington in Connecticut," by Christopher P. Bickford (FHL 974.62/F1 H2b, p. 20 states Farmington was settled in 1640 by Hartford citizens. The Porters are named. HIS CHURCH: "Robert Porter, himself joined to the Church, October 13, 1652. His wife joined after him, July 12, 1653." "Vital Records of Farmington in Connecticut," N.E.G.H.R. Vol. 11, p. 327, FHL book 974 B2ne, Vol 11. He was a puritan minister. HIS OCCUPATION: "Robert was primarily a farmer but was active in civic and church affairs. He was one of the original seven men who organized the Church of Christ in Farmington, 13 October, 1652. He was a man of good judgment, often chosen to inventory estates and witness wills." (Miller, p. 1.) FARMINGTON: Farmington was settled in 1640 by Hartford citizens. Two of the first settlers were Robert Porter and his son Thomas. Southington parish 9 miles from Farmington was settled by Daniel Porter and his sons Daniel and William Porter. (Farmington in Connecticut, by Christopher P. Bickford, FHL book 974.62/F1/H2b.) Robert Porter "joined in the Church Covenant in Farmington Oct. 13, 1652," His wife joined the church in 1653. Robert built the first homestead in 1643. Noah, deacon, born in that home. "Robert was one of the seven pillars of the church in Farmington, Connecticut which was formed Oct. 13, 1652." (Farmington Church and Town, by Mabel S. Hurlburt, FHL book 974.62/F1 K21h, p. 3.) On the same page it noted he left the Farmington Church in 1671 to settle "marsh land" at Mattatuck. He was sworn in as constable in Farmington Mar, 1656. He married 2. Hannah Freeman, widow of Stephen Freeman and daughter of Capt. John & Martha Alwood. Porter Family Notes, 1640-1821, Copied from the Lancaster County Historical Society, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. FHL film 20370, item 3, which was taken from Hurlburt, "Farmington Church and Town." In 1643 he built his first homestead in Farmington. His (great?) grandson Noah, Deacon of the church, was born there as were Noah's sons. (p. 43) In 1653 his wife joined the church at Farmington. "He joined the church Oct. 13, 1652, was one of the freemen of 1669, and one of the 84 proprietors of Waterbury in 1672." (The History of Waterbury, by Henry Bronson, FHL film 599,254, item 1, p. 175.) "On 5 March 1656 he was confirmed Constable of Farmington." (Miller) WATERBURY In 1671 he left the group at Farmington to settle "harsh land" at Mattatuck (later known as Waterbury.) (Farmington Church and Town, by Mabel S. Hurlburt, p. 3, 43, 88, (FHL book 974.62/F1/ K21h). In 1677 the "Village of Mattatuck was begun with pioneers from Farmington." These were mostly young men and their families who left the security of the church to found the new town. Robert Porter "was called to leave the church at Farmington" and go to Mattatuck. ("Ancient Burying Ground of the town of Waterbury, Connecticut," Complied by Kathryn A. Prichard, 1917, F.H.L.book 974.67/W1 V3p, p. 158-59.) "He first subscribed the articles for the settlement of Mattatuck, as late as May 26, 1684. His name is on the list of proprietors of 1688, and it stands first among the subscribers to Mr. Peck's settlement. He had a house and house lot on the north side of West Main Street, one acre and a half, bounded Feb. 1687-8, 'northerly and southerly on high-way, easterly on Thomas Hancox his land belonging to Ensign Judd, west on John Warner his land.' This property his son Thomas sold, Jan. 1692-3, to Abraham Andruss Jr." (The History of Waterbury, by Henry Bronson, FHL film 599,254, item 1, p. 175.) LAND RECORDS: "A paper with Edmond Scote caused to be entered (on record)--the contents now follow--'Know all men whom it may concern that I Robert Porter: of Waterbury have formerly given to my son: Benjamin: three parsels of land folowing which being now deceased my desire is that if it please god to give him an heire: that the lands hereafter mentioned: may fall to it but as I desire the Lord may requite the wife of my son deceased: so these are to declare that I do sequester the right to the use of the lands following to the wife of my son above said, deceased during her natural life: viz: (here are enumerated 7 pieces of land, 24 acres in all)--all which parsels of land as they lie my daughter above said shall and may quietly peaceably occupy, posses and enjoy. My hand and seal this 19 Feb. 1689." (Edmond Scott married the widow of Benjamin Porter in June 1689.) (Spelling modernized, The History of Waterbury, by Henry Bronson, FHL film 599,254, item 1, p. 176.) It is here noted there is a discrepancy in the dates. This deed bears the date Feb. 19, 1689, which, in new style should read 1690, and yet, the widow is stated on the record to have married Edmund Scott "sometime in June 1689." DEATH William S. |
