Note	FAMILY: He is noted to be the son of John Hand and Alice Stanborough. (Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut, FHL 974.67 G1 D2t, p. 595.) PROBATE OF HIS FATHER: John Hand Senior died before 24 January 1660/61, the date the inventory of his estate was presented at East Hampton. His will mentions but does not name his wife, but names four children: John, Stephen, Joseph and Mary and five younger unnamed children to be provided for by his wife, from what he leaves her. (G-1:178) ("A Hand Family," Harriet W. Hodge, p. 3-8 "The Early Hand Family," ) PROBATE: Joseph's probate is in Guilford Probates. His grandson John Hand's probate mentions the land "belonging to the heirs of Benjamin Hand, dec'd" and land "belonging to the heirs of aged Joseph Hand which he willed to his grandchildren and Ether Hand..." (Probate of Guilford, 1739-1750, FHL film 4354, p. 692, May 2, 1751. GUILFORD: Joseph is the only son of John who went to Guilford. On Oct 27, 1671 Benjamin Wright gave Joseph, his son-in-law, land at Hammonasset in the east end of Guilford. Two months later on Dec. 12 Joseph bought more land there. That may be when he moved to Guilford. On a list of original proprietors of Guilford, Ct, 1685, of the 96 names, Joseph Hand is one. (Judd Manuscript, Ct. and Berkshire Mass records, Vol 3, p. 150, FHL film 250,287.) He is said to have "lived in Guilford, Conn." in Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut, FHL 974.67 GZ D2t, p. 595. DEATH: Probably the Joseph Hand who died in Guilford Jan. 1724. (Connecticut Inscriptions, New Haven Co., Guilford, North Guilford, comp. by Glenn E. Griswold, FHL 974.67 G1, V3g, p. 7: "Known Deaths in Guilford not appearing in town records or tombstones.") The death date is given Jan. 1724 in (Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut, FHL 974.67 GZ D2t, p. 595.)
