Note | BIRTH "Connecticut Births and Christenings, 1649-1906," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F746-H8F Peter Pond, son of Samuel and Abigail Pond, b. 22 Jan 1718; Family History Library microfilm unknown. BRANFORD "Peter Pond was a fur trader and was on a trading voyage to Detroit when his wife died. He died insolvent and his main creditors were Capt. John Gibb and Garrett Van Horn Dewitt. He quit-claimed his Branford interests to his brother Josiah 11 March 1740, after which he called himself "of Milford." Cited in the family genealogy in Connecticut State Library: (Letter from Kenneth A. Buckbee, Genealogist, to Bryson C. Cook, Feb. 4, 2007) MILFORD, CT In 1740 Peter Pond sold his interests in Branford and moved to Milford. "Pond Point" on Long Island Sound in Milford, CT was named for Charles Pond who owned a large tract of land there. (a descendant?) (Letter from Kenneth A. Buckbee, Genealogist, to Bryson C. Cook, Feb. 4, 2007) Descendants still live in Milford and are proud of their heritage. There is a Pond Mansion on Long Island Sound, former residence of Charles Hobby Pond, a former Governor of CT, obviously with ancestral ties to Peter Pond and Mary Hubbard whose mother was a Hobby. DEATH The estate papers of Peter Pond are in the Hartford State Library, including 35 prs. men's shoes and pumps, 7 pr. leathers cut for women's shoes, 48 pr. men's and boys' shoes. Perhaps he was a shoemaker. (Letter from Kenneth A. Buckbee, Genealogist, to Bryson C. Cook, Feb. 4, 2007) |
