He was one of the beneficiaries named in the will of his maternal grandmother Elizabeth (Deming) (Foote), widow of Governor Thomas Welles. WETHERSFIELD In an indenture dated Nov. 30, 1668, he is styled “husbandman.” He lived in Wethersfield on land inherited from his father, probably the homelot described December 1659, as belonging to Josiah Churchill, in terms as follows, as given in <i>The Churchill Family in America</i>, p. 326: “On (one) pece of hom lot wheare on a house standeth containing three ac (acres), more or less the ends abutt against the streat east and Mr. Wells Weast The sides against the home lot of Sam Wells south and John Hubbard north.” HIS FATHER'S PROBATE Joseph's father, Josiah Churchill's will: Page 324 lists -- "He executed his will 17 Nov 1683 and died before January 1687." The inventory of his estate was taken 1-5 Jan 1687. Mention was made of the following children: Joseph, Benjamin, Mary CHURCH, Elizabeth BUCK, Anne RICE and Sarah WICKHAM. A son of Josiah and Elizabeth is not listed in the Wethersfield vital records, but is listed in the Churchill Family Record, 929.273-C475c p 325. PROBATE “Joseph Churchill, Wethersfield. Died 5 April 1699. Invt. L461-00-00. Taken by William Goodrich and Thomas Wickham. The Widow, Mary. The Children: Nathaniel age 22 years, Mary Edwards age 25, Elizabeth Butler 21, Dina 18, Samuel 11, Joseph 9, David and Jonathan 7, Hannah 3 years old. “Court Record page 126 - 9 March 1699-1700. That he was a man of ability and influence is shown by his gradual advancement to places of trust and influence. The Wethersfield records show that at the age of thirty he was chosen one of the town surveyors; three years later he was one of the assessors, and the next year, 1684, he was made collector of taxes. In 1689 he was chosen constable,assessor again in 1695, and at the annual meeting held Dec. 27, 1697 “Sergt Joseph Churchill” was chosen a Selectman, and again re-elected in 1698, and was still holding that office when he died April 1, 1699 at the age of 49 years. “The above date of death appears at the heading of the inventory. The estate was valued at 461 pounds, and his heirs, according to a memorandum at the end of the inventory, were the relict, Mary, Nathaniel, Mary Edwards, Elizabeth Butler, Dinah, Samuel Joseph, David, Jonathan, and Hannah."
