Mention was made of the following children: Joseph, Benjamin, Mary CHURCH, Elizabeth BUCK, Anne RICE and Sarah WICKHAM. A son of Josiah and Elizabeth is not listed in the Wethersfield vital records, but is listed in the Churchill Family Record, 929.273-C475c p 325. A Digest of the Early Connecticut Probate Records. 3 volumes. A digital version of the three volume set is available online at Internet Archive: Volume 1 (1635-1700) The following is from The Ancestry of William Francis Joseph Boardman “Lieutenant Churchill was many times elected to office. He was chosen surveyor in 1676, Lister 1681-1684, 1686, 1694; Constable 1683, 1695; Townsman for 1690, 1691, 1700, 1701; and filled many other positions of lesser importance. In May 1695 he was appointed by the General Court a member of the committee to settle the bounds of the lands on the east side of the “Great River” at Naubuc. He was made Lieutenant of the trainband in the northern part of Wethersfield May 8, 1701 and in 1703, when the military operations in Queen Anne’s War were commenced in the colony, he was made Lieutenant of the Second Company for Hartford County. Benjamin Churchill died at Wethersfield at an advanced age, it is believed in 1729. #115: Benjamin Churchill married July 8, 1676 MARY, whose family name is unknown. She died in Wethersfield where her gravestone has this inscription: Here/ lieth the/ body of/ Mary wife of/ Benjamin Churchell/ who died October/ ye 30th 1712/ in ye 60th/ year of her age. He married 2nd about 1715, Sarah the widow of Samuel Deming and daughter of Emanuel Buck. She was living in 1728, and in the settlement of her first husband, signed herself as "Sarah Churchill.” (#59 in this book) The Churchill Family in America p. 327-328 gives her as the wife of Jonathan Churchill (b. 1692,) but that is probably incorrect because she would be 23 years older than Jonathan, and age 60 by the time his last child was born.. BENJAMIN CHURCHILL (Josiah1). Born in Wethersfield May 16, 1652, and lived there. The records of his native town show that Mr. Churchill was early recognized as of ability and enterprise. At the age of 23 he was elected a surveyor, and soon after held successively the offices of collector, assessor, and constable. At the age of 37 years he was chosen Selectman, and for years served in that office. He was a surveyor of some note beyond his own town and often served on committees of survey for other towns, appointed by the General Assembly. “May 8, 1701 he was elected Lieutenant of the “Trainband,”for the north precinct of Wethersfield. He was living in 1728, but the tax list of 1730 does not contain his name, and the probability is that he died before 1730, though the date of his death is not found on the records. “Married July 6, 1676 Mary (_____).
