BIRTH: "A Hand Family, Some Ancestors and Descendants of Lemuel Hand, 1725-1802...) by Harriet Woodbury Hodge, C.G., FHL book 929.273 H191hhw, p. 9. She used as her sources William Richard Cutter, "Genealogy and Family History of Central New York," 1:395-396, while admitting there were sometimes errors. She also used "The Wallace Records of 1906", typescript, 1931, p. 79 and a speech by Osborn Hand at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in 1880, 77. She noted the Rev. Nathaniel Huntting, who kept good records, did the baptizing in Wainscott, but he was probably born in East Hampton. (p. 1) HISTORY: This family was oriented more to Connecticut than new York. Lemuel's mother's family was in Durham and some of the family spouses were from Durham. When he was still a boy Lemuel was bound as an apprentice to a tailor in Middletown, CT, but his guardian removed him for ill usage and bound him to a blacksmih in Durham. It is not known why he had a guardian because his father apparently was alive in 1747 when he received 3 acres at East Hampton. (Harriet Hodge, p. 2) Their first three children were born in Durham, after which they moved 15 miles south to Branford. They moved back to Durham for the birth of their 8th child, all of which are found in vital records of those towns. (Harriet Hodge, p. 2-3) This family listed in deatail in "Hand Sisson and Scott, More Yeoman Ancestors," by Carol C. Johnson, FHL book 929.273 H191j, p. 33. CORNWALL We don't know when the family moved to Cornwall, Litchfield CT, because when Lemuel bought 66 acres there in 1778 he was described as "of Cornwall." Since we know from family records he and Hannah lived with Abraham's family in Hand Hollow when they died, it is quite likely they were living with them in Cornwall before Lemuel purchased his own land. He bought 11 more acres there in 1780, and in 1782 sold the whole thing to move to New York. (Harriet Hodge, p. 3) NEW LEBANON, NEW YORK Lemuel sold his land in 1782 and Abraham sold his blacksmith shop in Cornwall in 1784. Soon the whole family moved to New Lebanon, the parents living with Abraham's family until they died. DEATH: He died while living with Abraham's family in Hand Hollow in 1802. ("A Hand Family," by Harriet Hodge, FHL book 929.273 H191hhw, p. 3)
