BIRTH: Barbour Collection, Durham Vital Records, "Nathan Hand, son of Lemuel and Hannah Hand born 10 Sep. 1756." Also found in "Hand Sisson and Scott, More Yeoman Ancestors," by Carol C. Johnson, FHL book 929.273 H191j, p. 33. On p. 152 it lists his descendants in Troy and Albany, New York for generations, although Hand, Sisson and Scott claims those descendants belong to the Nathan Hand from Shoreham CT, born in 1747. More research. REVOLUTIONARY WAR He served extensive enlistments in the war. ("A Hand Family," by Harriet Hodge, FHL book 929.273 H191hhw, p. 2-3) GOSHEN, CONNECTICUT Because his family was in Cornwall, Litchfield, CT, he is almost certainly the Nathan Hand in Goshen Land records. Jeremiah How sold to "Nathan Hand of Goshen" land in south Goshen May 9, 1781, (6:305) Nathan sold land he purchased in May in south Goshen Sept 24, 1781, (6:338) On the same day he bought land for 100 pounds in Goshen. (6:317) Nathan Hand and Lt. Kettel bought two pieces of land in Goshen May 12, 1785 (7:299) Nathan bought 18 acres in the center of Goshen Sept 27, 1786. (7:384) On Jan. 12, 1788 Nathan Hand sold 18 acres near the center of Goshen (7:363) On April 26, 1787 he bought 3 acres in Goshen (7:342) On Aug. 8, 1787 he sold those 3 acres to Benjamin Porter. At the top of the deed were the words "Robert Porter's deed of Nathan Hand." Obviously both Benjamin and Robert, whose mother Deborah was third cousin to Nathan, were known in town although the deed apparently was Benjamin's. (7:350) On November 12, 1787 he sold the land and buildings on which he lived for 110 pounds (7:363) On Jan. 12, 1788 he sold his land, previously divided with Capt. Kettel in the center of town (7:384) On April 5, 1788 Benjamin Porter bougtht land formerly belonging to Nathan Hand at Goshen (5:221) After that there is no mention of Nathan Hand and no other land record. Obviously that is when he moved to New Lebanon. (CANAAN) NEW LEBANON, ALBANY, NEW YORK His brother Abraham having been there since 1786, Nathan Hand is noted in the road survey 20 Nov. 1790 and again in the 29 Aug. 1792 Petition for road as having a store in New Lebanon. In 1791 He was appointed fence viewer. In 1792 a petition for road names his store again. In 1794 he was elected Highway Comissioner and signed a Road Survey. From 1796 to 1800 he was Overseer of the Poor. In 1803 and 1804 he was Assessor as well as Inspector of elections. All this time his brothers were also noted in the record. "A Hand Family, Some Ancestors and Descendants of Lemuel Hand, 1725-1802...) by Harriet Woodbury Hodge, C.G., FHL book 929.273 H191hhw, p. 73-75.) in 1798 he and others petitioned for a road to be built from the Massachusetts Line where the road leads from Pittsfield and Hancock by the springs in Cannan, commonly called New Lebanon Springs, to the city of Albany.
