Note | BIRTH: Barbour Collection, Durham Vital Records, Abraham Hand, son of Lemuel and Hannah Hand born 17 Oct 1751, Christened 20 Oct." CORNWALL His second son was born there in 1774 so we know he was the first in the family to move to Cornwall. He already had land there in 1777 when his father bought land in Cornwall. Perhaps his parents were living with him when they purchased land in Cornwall for the first time in 1777. ("A Hand Family," by Harriet Hodge, FHL book 929.273 H191hhw, p. 2-3) REVOLUTIONARY WAR He served extensive enlistments in the war. ("A Hand Family," by Harriet Hodge, FHL book 929.273 H191hhw, p. 2-3) He set up his blacksmith shop wherever he went, so was not there for the three years he was fighting in the war. Probably his father ran the shop for him while he was gone. (CANAAN) NEW LEBANON, ALBANY, NEW YORK Abraham Hand had a shop in the old town of Canaan by 1786. (Road Survey, 8 Nov. 1786. (Town Records of Canaan Town. 1801 and 1803 he was an overseer of Highways. Commissioner of Highways in 1802-1804. His brothers were also in the record: "A Hand Family, Some Ancestors and Descendants of Lemuel Hand, 1725-1802...) by Harriet Woodbury Hodge, C.G., FHL book 929.273 H191hhw, p. 73-75.) 1800 CENSUS: Canaantown, New York. There are two elderly people here, obviously Abraham's parents were living with them again. FAMILY: His descendants for generations are in the book "A Hand Family," by Harriet Hodge, FHL book 929.273 H191hhw DEATH: He and his wife died within a few weeks of each other of "the cold plague." They were both 61 years old, having been born within a few weeks of each other as well. |
