Note | BIRTH: Barbour Collection of Farmington Vital Records, F.H.L. book 974.6 V2wL, Vol. 12, p. 315. "Thomas Porter, son Ebenezer." He was named in his mother's probate. "Deacon Porter was born in Farmington, Feb. 14, 1734. His great-grandfather, Thomas, was one of the original proprietors of that town. His father died when he was 17. In 1755, he served in the British army at Lake George. Two years later he came to Cornwall in May and bought a farm, and 22 June 1758 he married Abigail Howe." (History of Cornwall, Ct., by Edward C. Starr, FHL book 974.61/C2 H2s, p. 349.) CORNWALL: "Thomas, the son of Ebenezer, father of Rev. Dr. Ebenezer, was born Feb. 15, 1733-34, was one of the settlers of Cornwall, Conn., and the leadng man, both in church and state in that town. He afterwards removed to Tinmouth, Vt." (NEGHR, Vol 9, Jan 1855, p. 54.) He was Selectman of Cornwall 1759-61, on the Committee to build the school 1760, Tithingman, 1761-2; Grand Jury 1762-3; Tithingman 1763-78; Moderator of Town Meeting Sept 3, 1778. (Cornwall Documents, 1740-1875, FHL book 974.61/C2 N2g, pp28-59, 214-16.) He was named as beneficiary in his cousin Timothy's probate: Will dated Sept 11, 1770, Farmington. He gives to his cousin Timothy his house, barn and homestead (in Farmington?.) To his cousins Thomas, John & Ebenezer he bequeaths all his property in Cambridge and Cornwall "their father owed him." ("Town of Farmington Probate," F.H.L. film 4,207, Vol 2, p. 150, 218, 237.) That explains why he moved to Cornwall. Thomas Porter of Cornwall (Litchfield) found in "Probates and Bounty Land Applications #17640 in FHL film 971955 LAND RECORDS: (Land Records of Cornwall, Vol 2, 1755-1770, FHL film 3958, p. 90.) On Nov. 21, 1757 Thomas bought Timothy Gridley's half of the original land bought by his father Ebenezer Porter which "lieth in 2 pieces Viz: 1/2 of 100 acres lying on the east side of the highway the other half belonging to the heirs of Ebenezer Porter." Nov. 29, 1766 "Thomas Porter of Cornwall" adm. estate of Asahel Moss of Cornwall. (Land Records of Cornwall, Vol 2, 1755-1770, FHL film 3958, p. 449.) Sold land in Cornwall Dec. 4, 1778 (Land Records of Cornwall, Vol 4, 1778-1782 FHL film 3958, p. 345.) "Thomas Porter of Tinmouth" bought and sold land Feb 13, 1789. (Land Records of Cornwall, Vol 5, 1783-1789 FHL film 3958, pp. 322, 323.) PROBATE: Thomas lived in Cornwall, Litchfield, Connecticut near his third cousin Seth Porter (also named in the probate of Thomas's mother) who lived in Goshen. Later they both moved to Rutland County, Vermont. In 1779 Thomas and his brother Ebenezer moved to Tinmouth, Rutland, Vermont (A Biographical History of the County of Litchfield, F.H.L. 974.61 D3k, p. 291.) HISTORICAL: Elected deacon in Cornwall Oct 8. 1767. Re-elected until 1779 "until he removed to Tinmouth, Vt." (p. 60, Gold.) He was Representative to the General Assembly from Cornwall May, 1769 to May, 1775. (p. 231, Gold) Elected 13 times (Starr p. 406) "Thomas the son of Ebenezer, father of Rev. Dr. Ebenezer, was born Feb. 15, 1733/4, was one of the settlers of Cornwall, Conn., and the leading man, both in church and state, in that town. He afterwards removed to Tinmouth, Vt..." F.H.L. 974.61/C2 H2g) He was with the army at Fishkill (Connecticut Historical Collection 13:84) VERMONT: Deacon Porter left Cornwall because of church controversy (Starr, p. 87) At once he was made a justice, and in 1780 a Representative and immediately became Speaker of the House for three years. In 1781 he was made Judge of the Rutland County Court; in 1784 he became Judge of the Supreme Court of Vermont. In 1791 he was a member of the convention that approved of the US Constitution.
