Note | HISTORY: Minister of Cornwall. His birth date noted. He was president of Andover College and Theological Seminary. (Historical Records of the Town of Cornwall, Litchfield, County, Ct., 1904, by Theodore S. Gold, p.386. F.H.L. 974.61/C2 H2g) On page 370 it states there are numerous books and pamphlets about him. He "was one of the natives of Cornwall." HIS CHILDREN: "Dr. Porter had no children of his own but adopted two of Rev. Tiothy Stone's, Prof. T. D. P. Stone, and Irene who died shortly before him." ("History of Cornwall, Ct," by Edward C. Starr, FHL book 974.61/C2 H2s, p. 348.) DEATH: "Some Nutmeggers who migrated" by Grace Knox and B. Ferris, F.H.L.book 974.6 Wzk, p. 183. BIRTH and DEATH: "A Biographical History of the County of Litchfield," F.H.L. 974.61 D3k, p. 291. He was born at Cornwall, son of Thomas of Cornwall. In 1779 the family moved to Tinmouth, Rutland, Vermont where Ebenezer studied to be a minister. In 1792 he graduated, having studied with Rev. Job Swift at Bennington, Vermont. He studied divinity at the Theological school at Bethehem, and in 1796 was ordained pastor of the Congregational Church at Washington, Litchfield, Connecticut. In 1812 he became professor at the seminary at Andover and in 1827 the President of the seminary. He was licensed to preach in South Britain, Salisbury and Washington. |
