Note | BIRTH Timothy Collins Rev, Birth 4/13/1699 in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, the son of John and Ann Collings. Death 2/07/1777 in Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA (Some Guilford (Conn.) families from Dr. Alvan Talcott's manuscript of Guilford (Conn.) families, copied by Nettie Barnum Eells, Family History Library 4328 Item 1) Also found in Families of Early Guilford, CT, by Alvan Talcott, Family History Library book 974.67/G1 D2t , p. 224: Rev. Timothy Collins, son of John and Ann (Leete) Collins was born April 13, 1699. Married L.C. (Litchfield Co?) 1718. Died Feb. 1777. Lived in Litchfield, Conn, 1723. Yale College 1718. LITCHFIELD: Timothy Collins was one of the original settlers of Litchfield, CT. On 15 Oct. 1724 "a memorial to the General Assembly was agreed upon and...sent to New Haven by the hand of Timothy Collins to be delivered to the Court." The memorial describes the precautions taken by the scattered settlers to protect themselves from the Indians. In spite of that, the Indians were a great threat, preventing people from working their land and causing extreme poverty. Thus, they petitioned the court to be relieved of their taxes. (The History of the town of Litchfield, CT, 1720-1920, by Alain C. White of the Litchfield Historical Society, FHL 974.61/L1 H2w, p. 22) He was reverend of the church at Litchfield until 1753, after which the town voted to call the Rev. Judah Champion of East Haddam. He was ordained July 4, 1753. His ministry had been marked with conflict over salary, as the townspeople were already burdened with taxes after establishing their town. Finally he withdrew from the ministry. Charges were brought against him, but he won the case. He stayed in town thereafter and was appointed in 1755 Surgeon of one of the Connecticut Regiments in the Expedition against Crown Point. (The History of the town of Litchfield, CT, by George C. Woodruff, Family History Library fiche 6062200, pp. 27-32.) LITCHFIELD Timothy Collins known as the First minister in the town of Litchfield. "Philo Collins , of Goshen, Conn. , and of Olive his wife, daughter of Ebenezer Foote , of Watertown, Conn. , afterwards of Cornwall, Mar. , July 9, 1809 . Mr. Collins was son of Cyprian Collins , of Goshen , and grandson of Rev. Timothy Collins , first minister of Litchfield" (Genealogical Notes First Settlers of Connecticut and Massachusetts, p. 88, Ancestry.com) |
