Note | SALISBURY: Tax lists of Salisbury: William Patterson 1761 (Salisbury Church Records, 1740-1891, FHL film 5510, item 5, unnumbered pages. Since William's daughter Sarah married Simeon Porter of Salisbury and Great Barrington, it is possible they either knew each other in Salisbury or married there. 1790 CENSUS: Great Barrington, Berkshire, Mass. Nathaniel Porter and his son Simeon and wife Sarah (Patterson) are next to each other on the census surrounded by three Patterson families: David, Thomas and William (Roll: M637_4; Image: 0283, as seen on Ancestry.com) P. 351, column 2, lines 19-23. GREAT BARRINGTON: Land Records: William Pattison/Patterson bought and sold land from 1779 to 1800 in Great Barrington. (Middle Dist 23:172; 15:107, 223-228, 227; 20:410; 21:380; 22:285; 23:174; 24:213, 507, 597; 28:3; 36:455.) He also had deeds in the Southern District. 15:107: William Patterson in the county of Hartford, Ct bought land in Gt. Barrington 8 Mar. 1777. 20:410: William "Pateson" of Gt. WILL: Dated 19 July 1801 (Probates of Berkshire Co., MA 12:365-67, FHL 873,486, item 2) He mentions only children Mary Tiar or Piar, Esther Graham, Sarah Porter, Children of my deceased son John, William Jun. Thomas, David, George, children of my daughter Elizabeth Crosly. Most of his estate has already been distributed by the time he died. Witnesses are Barnabas Bidwell, Catherine Osborne and Lucy Porter (sister of Simeon Porter who is Sarah's husband.) PROBATE: Will was proved 7 May 1805 at Probate Court. William Jun. of Great Barrington to be administrator. Barnabas Bidswell, Esq. and Catherine Osborne, "two of the subscribing witnesses to the (will) appearing, made oath...that they together with Lucy Porter, who is now sick, are subscribers as witness to the same." His inventory totaled only $29.04, including many books about Christian living and his personal effects, his estate having already been distributed. DEATH: His will proved 7 May 1805. We know he died at Great Barrington because among the papers in his son-in-law Simeon Porter’s Revolutionary War Pension Application is an affidavit signed by Oliver Partridge of Great Barrington. He said “I do recollect that William Patterson and Nathaniel Porter with their families came and settled about three miles from us on new land and near each other, I think in 1775 and 1776…That said Doctor Youngself (was) their physician several years and until their deaths…” (See Revolutionary War Pension W17468, NA Roll 1955, Simeon Porter.) |
