Note | BIRTH: ""Ancestors of Robert Harry McIntire and Helen Annette McIntire," by Robert Harry McIntire, Gateway Press, Baltimore, 1980," p. 22. Also recorded in "Families of Ancient New Haven," Vol 1, by D L. Jacobus, 1923, p. 437. Ref. is Wallingford Vital Records. REVOLUTIONARY WAR: Thaddeus Cook was born in 1728, the son of Samuel Cook, Jr., who with his father, Samyuel, Sr. were among the first settlers of Wallingford. Mr. William Todd of Mt. Carmel who has written a paper on the Cook family relates that the great-grandfather of Thaddeus emigrated from England in the early days of Plymouth Colony and died in that place in 1640. The son, Samuel joined the New Haven Colony in 1663. According to Mrs. Davela, the house originally had 11 rooms when built by Colonel Cook, who was a Revolutionary soldier under General Gates. At the time of his death the plot included (unreadable, 57 or 570 acres) of land. (Joan Desmond, “Davellas Restoring Thaddeus Cook’s Mansion Built in 1758,” Wallingford Post, August 19, 1965.) DEATH: Wallingford Cemetery Records, Centre Cemetery, FHL 165997, item 1. "Thaddeus Cook died 27 Feb. 1800, age 72. He served in 1777 under General Gales." Also recorded in "Families of Ancient New Haven," Vol 1, by D L. Jacobus, 1923, p. 437. Ref. is Center Street Cemetery in Wallingford. WALLINGFORD There is a house dated 1726 on Cook Hill Farm which likely belonged to the original family. Located not far from Samuel Cook’s house and tannery, this house has been attributed to Thaddeus Cook, grandson of Samuel. It was a “salt box” home, built in the economically squarish shape, but without insulation of any kind. Eventually soil was piled up against the walls to provide warmth in winter, deteriorating the foundation. At present it has not been restored. Thaddeus was the oldest son of Samuel’s son Samuel Jr. Samuel Jr. was born in 1695 and died at age 57 having amassed a considerable fortune in shipping. Since Thaddeus was born in 1728 and the house dates to 1726, it was likely Samuel Jr.’s originally. If Thaddeus was the original owner, the Cook Hill house predates his mansion built in 1758 which has been restored and is among the Wallingford Historic Houses. Thaddeus, a Revolutionary War soldier, obviously was doing very well because at his death the home of 11 rooms and 575 acres of land were listed in his probate. This mansion is located on 1640 Tuttle Ave in Wallingford. It offers a stark contrast to his cousin Daniel Cook, also a Revolutionary War soldier who died in Goshen, Connecticut as a result of privation during the war and whose property was soon lost to his brother Moses. |
