ENGLAND Reference made in the book to a letter written April 17, 1905 by Dr. Howard M. Buck of Boston, MA: “I was examining ‘The Kirbys of New England’ by Meletaiah Everett Dwight, and found a good deal of information about the family. Among other things I found a lawyer’s memorandum, <i>in re,</i> some land claimed by Mary’s younger brother to the effect that the latter should find out what your cousin Buck (i.e. brother-in-law Emanuel) remembers about the people in Rowington (Warwickshire.) As Kirby came to America as a boy of twelve in 1635,and as Emanuel was of the same age, it looks as if they might have come from that same neighborhood. The Kirkbys or Kirbys were an old Yorkshire family, as well as the Bucks. “The book is an interesting one. It gives old John Kirby’s will, etc. There were no Bucks or Kirbys (at least in the gentry) recorded in the Visitations, as settled in Rowington, Warwickshire, and John Kirby eventually belonged to the gentry class. It looks as if they were migrants even there.” The last statement is undoubtedly correct, as the defective registers of births and deaths in Rowington fail to furnish any evidence of there having been any Bucks in that parish early in the Seventeenth Century. WETHERSFIELD "There was an ENOCH BUCK in court at Hartford in 1648, and made free there in 1647. He might have been the father or brother of Emanuel, Henry and Thomas Buck, who were all at Wethersfield about the same time, (but) not the first settlers.  Emanuel’s first child was b. in 1650. Thomas m. in 1665, and Henry m. there in 1660. Ezekiel Buck, son of Emanuel, had a son Enoch b. April 5, 1683. There is no other Enoch Buck found, except Enoch found in court in 1648, whose death or marriage is not found in Wethersfield. The four Bucks might have been brothers; yet the record gives no proof of it. "BUCK, ENOCH was fined 10s for irregular speeches in court against Rob’t Rose, when under oath in March, 1648, and appears to have been the first of the name in Wethersfield. Wm BUCK age 50, ROGER BUCK age 18, embarked in the ship Increase, Robert Lea, master, April 15, 1635 for New England. CHRISTIAN BUCK, aged 26, embarked in The Blessing, John Lester, master, for New England. EMANUEL BUCK was a freeman, and constable at Wethersfield in 1669, and frequently a Selectman." "So far as one can learn from the town records, there were in Wethersfield at the same time, three persons who bore the name Buck: viz, Emanuel Buck, Henry Buck and Thomas Buck. The records also mention the name Enoch Buck. Thus, it was stated that Enoch Buck who was in court in Hartford in 1648 was fined ten shillings for irregular speeches in court against Robert Rose, while under oath. "Then again the record states that in 1654 a grant of land for a home lot was made to Enoch Buck. There is a tradition, still extant among the old residents of Wethersfield, that the first one of that name was originally called Emanuel, and that, when he asked for admission into the settlement, permission was granted on the understanding that he would change his name, Emanuel (literal meaning ‘God with us’) being no proper name for a man to bear. Whereupon he adopted the name Enoch and was then admitted. Whether the tradition be corrector not, the records of the court show that our first American ancestor bore, atone and the same time, the names Emanuel and Enoch. "The exact date of birth of Emanuel Buck is not known, but it must have been somewhere about 1623, as he testified in court in 1684 that he was then sixty-one years old. He was a freeman and constable in 1669, and he was also frequently a selectman. Emanuel Buck must have commanded the respect and confidence of his neighbors, and have possessed considerable force of character, or he would not have been chosen to serve as a selectman and as a constable. At the same time, he was not what is ordinarily termed a religious man, for his name does not appear on the list of those who were actually members of the church in Wethersfield. "His chief occupation seems to have been that of running a sawmill. In addition, however,he must have devoted considerable time to tilling the ground and looking after his livestock and his crops. GENEALOGY BUCK, EMANUELL and his wife Sarah of Wethersfield had children: 1. Ezekiel b. Jan. 15, 1650; 2. John b. Nov. 1652; 3. Jonathan b. April 8, 1655. His wife died and he married Mary Kirby April 17, 1658 and had issue: 1. Mary b. Jan. 1, 1659; 2. David b. April 13, 1667, d. Sept. 20, 1738; 3. Sarah b. April 1, 1669; 4. Hannah b. April 12, 1671; 5. Elizabeth b. June 4, 1676; 6. Thomas b. June 10, 1678; 7. Abigail b. Aug. 1, 1682. His second wife d. Jan. 12, 1712.
