Note | BIRTH: Index of Vital Records of Farmington, Connecticut, FHL film 1315115. In spite of the fact that he may have been known later as John Timothy or Timothy, the birth record for "John Porter son of Thomas Portter, tayl'r" may be correct. There is no birth record in Farmington for anyone named John Timothy or Timothy Porter. Family tradition gave his birth date 1710, although logic implies if the parents were in their 60's there's something wrong. There was another man named Thomas Porter (b. 1650, son of Robert) at the same time in Farmington, and is known as "Thomas Porter, tailor." There is no way to judge to whom this John Porter should be assigned, but Sanford Porter Family Organization thinks it's this one. More research will have to be done. FAMILY: His children born in Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island found in "The Vital Records of Rhode Island, 1638-1850, Vol 5, Washington County," by James N. Arnold, N.E.G.H.S. Library REF/ F/78/ A75/V.5. NAME: In at least one record he was called Timothy by Sanford, although he admitted it was hearsay from "old brother Tanner" later in life. In the "Sketch of the Life of Sanford Porter" written by Sanford Porter it states: "My grandfather's name is Timothy Porter--who was born at Hartford, Conn. in the year 17?. My father's name is Nathan Porter; born in Brimfield, Mass, in 1745. My mother's name is Susanna West Porter..." He mentioned that "he had, as a young boy, visited the farm in Rhode Island where his father had lived, and where his grandfather before him had lived." In all official records he is known as "John Porter." I believe his name should be changed to John Porter. John deeded land to Nathan Jan. 19, 1769 (Book 2, p. 175.) In Book 2, p. 176 there is recorded a life lease made Jan. 19, 1769 naming Nathan as the son of John Porter LAND RECORDS: John Porter of Westerly, R.I. bought land from John Porter of Killingly, Conn, 2 July 1744 (Land Evidence Book No. 5, Book 8, p. 95, Westerly Court House, as recorded in "The Porter Family History" by J. G. Stevenson, p. 250. 1761-John Porter of Hopkinton, R.I. bought from Thomas Foster also of Hopkinton, 30 acres of land (Land Evidence Book 1, Hopkinton p. 295, Dated Jan. 30, 1761.) Ancestry: Check the book "Porter Family History" by J. G. Stevenson pp. 264- for research notes and possibilities. This family has been difficult to trace |
