Note | BIRTH: Thomas Ravenhill McCann, 1814-1882, unsigned family history in possession of Janet Porter. VOCATION An apprentice to learn calico printing. After his marriage he and Sarah worked in the factory at Stockport, he at printing calico and she at weaving. (Thomas Ravenhill McCann, 1814-1882, unsigned family history)\ STOCKPORT, LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND He was there at his marriage in 1835 and in 1839 heard the missionaries preach the gospel. LDS CHURCH Baptized March 26, 1839 by Elder Joseph Fielding. Ordained an elder by Parley P. Pratt Served as President of the Branch for four years. Emigrated to America, leaving Jan. 1, 1843 on the ship Swanton with 250 saints on board with Apostle Lorenzo Snow Captain. Took a steamer from New Orleans and were greeted by the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum when they arrived at Nauvoo 9 April 1843. He reported being a good friend to the Prophet Joseph Smith and often went with him to visit and administer to the sick. The Prophet gave Thomas a handkerchief which he promised would heal the sick if he held fast to the faith. 1843-1846 Lived in Nauvoo when they first arrived. Bought an 80-acre farm in Des Moines The end of 1844 they moved to Warsaw, Illinois near Nauvoo Because of conflict and injustice, he lost his job and his home, forced to live with a friend, Royal Durphey. Feeling it useless to buy land in that country, he rented a log house and helped defend Nauvoo and the church. They were at the Conference when Brigham Young was sustained the new prophet shortly after they named their next child Brigham Young. Left Nauvoo and stayed the winter of 1846-47 at Garden Grove. He was sick much of the winter and had a difficult time building his house and providing for his family. WINTER QUARTERS In the spring of 1847 they arrived at Council Bluffs and Thomas planted his crop. As he was building a house he cut his foot badly and had to spend many weeks healing. Left in Stephen Markham's company June 20, 1850 and arrived in Salt Lake October 1. UTAH Lived in Salt Lake City until 1855 Moved to Ogden until 1860. Called to help settle Franklin, Idaho in 1860. Moved to Smithfield about 1868 Called to help settle Bear Lake County in Idaho, later moving to Fish Haven. DEATH: Thomas Ravenhill McCann, 1814-1882, unsigned family history in possession of Janet Porter. His poem: Some folks into this world do creep/ Merely just to eat and sleep./ To devour all the fowl and fish/ And leave behind an empty dish./ And if their tombstones when they die/ Are not made to flatter and to lie/ There's nothing of them can be said/ But that they ate up all the bread/ Drank all the drink and gone to bed. |
