Phineas and his ancestry are found in The Town and City of Waterbury, Connecticut from the Aboriginal Period to the year 1895, Ed. by Joseph Anderson, D.D. 1896, F.H.L. book 974.67/U1 H2a, Vol 1, p. 106. REVOLUTIONARY WAR: In 1772 Phineas Porter was an Ensign of the First Company of Waterbury. In April, 1775, he was Captain of the First Regiment (p. 416). On June 1 1775, Captain Phineas Porter marched for New York. (p. 470). On June 28 he was in Harlem and Long Island; and September 8 received orders to march to Canada. They arrived at Albany Oct. 1, later in Greenbush. On Oct 10 they crossed the Mohawk River to Half Moon and Saratoga. November 6 they began the northward march to Montreal. On Nov. 8 they began marching southward and were in Norfolk by December 9. (p. 470) 1800 CENSUS: Waterbury, New Haven, Connecticut. ELIZABETH: Court records show an Elizabeth Porter was put in his care by the court. His sister Elizabeth married late, after 1783, so it's possible she could have been the Elizabeth placed in his care. DEATH: ("Ancient Burying-Grounds of the Town of Waterbury Connecticut, Katharine A. Prichard, 1917, p. 88 #539, F.H.L. book 974.7W1, V3p.) He was 64 years old. "In Memory of Phineas Porter, Esq..." On p. 274 of the same book is a list of the 13 levels of the church seating chart. Thomas, Phineas's father is "First Dignity," while Phinehas Porter is "Second Dignity, the Great Pew." Obviously the family was held in high regard. |
